GOP thinking about canceling Medicare prescription program
to fund Gulf Coast rebuilding. W touted his passage of that program as an election tool. The GOP are thinking of scrapping it while keeping tax cuts for the rich alive, and Iraq spending.

1. It's a stupid program anyway
It's just a giveaway to the drug companies, with mystifyingly complex rules, and for most seniors it will not reduce their overall drug costs anyway.

8. agreed..
and therefore it may not be a bad thing if they DO cut it. It would take away Bush's argument that he did something to help the elderly (which we all knew was bogus anyway) and gives the Democrats something to whack them over the head with in the midterms - a la - you kept the tax cuts, but screwed the seniors. Not to mention, hopefully a chance of writing a decent bill that really would help the seniors (heck, I can hope, right?).

3. Iraq spending will be cut ...
there's way too much public pressure to cut back on Iraq spending for bush to resist ... and republicans are verrrry nervous about the midterms ... they want to show that Iraq is "entering the end game" ...

i think bush will scale back the "chase the insurgents" effort and focus a much smaller force, secured inside permanent military bases, on the Iraqi oil fields ... after all, that was the point of the whole insanity in the first place ...

this is bush's have his cake and eat it too strategy ...
