9. When the truth is, environmental protections are actually

good for business all around. And they are especially valuable in providing healthy water, air, soil, etc for all things to thrive. The only thing 'bad for business' in this is it benefits all citizens, not just the few and greedy.

5. I agree, the United States as it presently exists is too large.......

and needs to be broken up into several different independent sovereign nations. These new countries could be formed based on different ideologies and priorities. This would allow us to abolish the Federal government in Washington D.C. which in itself would be a tremendous accomplishment. It is the ONLY HOPE for the environment; bushco won't be satisfied until they have clear cut the entire nation.

I disagree regarding D.C. Once around the mall and the monuments and you realize that it represents the democratic ideal. I defy any real American to walk through the FDR monument area without crying. If you can manage to do it without shedding a tear, you're a Republican.

I was speaking about the Federal Government itself, not eliminating the beautiful city of Washington, D.C.

I can say emphatically that Federal government is only as good as the people allow it to be. Which I guess is what they mean when they say you get the government you deserve.

government is no longer in the hands of "the people" but instead is controlled, manipulated and fleeced by the corporations and the filthy rich. I certainly don't believe I deserve this corrupt government and I'm certain all of the people here on DU don't deserve it either. Don't let your parent's employment affiliation with the federal government cloud your good sense of reason. Our federal government is a behemoth monster that is totally out of control.

12. There were two things we could have done/do:

(1) We could redefine the word "government." Government as run by the Democrats is totally different than the way it's run by the Republicans. It deserves a different definition. It's like those three brothers on Green Acres. How do you know which one you're talking about if they have the same name? One form of government just needed fine tuning, the other is turning out to be a nightmare.

(2) We made a terrible mistake in 2004, by not taking to the streets. We should have done that if for no other reason to force the media to do their jobs and look at the election fraud.

We get the government we deserve. I would love to believe that we could fix what went wrong, in a democratic way. But we don't trust the voting booths anymore, and that means we have to ratchet up the next level with civil protests. I think it will be easier next time because we'll have alot of ex-Bush voters with us getting burned and I suspect they won't take too kindly to this feeling of helplessness.

They succeeded in making environmental concerns a joke to the nation and stupid, stupid people who think environmentalism is having open land for ATV's, and shooting ducks and deer.

The Forest Service's job is, essentially, to serve the forests to those with the most powerful lobbies. In this case, it includes, and always has included, the timber industry. The Forest Service is tasked with parcelling out the national forests to various private interests in proportion to their influence.
