Very interesting Zogby Interactive Poll...
I just received.

It was all about the California Governor's race - it asked all combinations of Schwarzenegger on one side, and Phil Angelides, Steve Westly, Warren Beatty and Rob Reiner in the Democratic Primary and heads-up against Arnold.

I wonder who commissioned this. Do you think Beatty and/or Reiner are seriously considering a run?

1. Mine was all about the New York governor's race.
I suspect this was commissioned by a national party organization.

4. Yeah, probably...
I hadn't thought of that. I was thinking of individuals.

Nevertheless, it's interesting that Beatty and Reiner are up there with Angelides and Westly (barf) as candidates under consideration.

6. They want to counter star with star.
Since the Californians proved so unbelievably shallow. Touchscan, wasn't it?

7. Touchscan?
I don't understand.

If you're talking about voting systems, we use a variety of them.

All my ballots are on paper - either punch cards or cards where I connect arrows with a black marker. I've never voted electronically here.

9. The black marker ones are op-scan.
Those are the ones that are actually most suspect. Check out the 2004 Election forum to see about them. A lot of sketchy results centered around op-scan counties last fall.

10. That makes me so mad!!!
Those damned nitwits who voted for him probably thought it would make a great story to tell the grandchildren or something. Shallow doesn't begin to describe what they are. Then, to add insult to injury, the Dems think they are cute by countering with another 'celeb'!

If this idiot doesn't, once and for all, dispel the notion that an outsider is good because they are not beholden to anyone or so rich they don't have to do fundraisers then God help us all!

11. it bothers me, too
I admire Warren Beatty's politics and his activism. Similarly, I have some respect for Reiner (but the notion of a 300lb man arguing for a tax on cigarettes strikes me as sort of silly), but I don't want either of them to run my government.

What the hell is wrong with electing people with experience, training and education in government? We don't let people with a passing interest in dentistry drill our teeth - why do we let dilettantes run our government?

21. I think the old belief that someone
from 'outside' politics will not be unduly influenced by money, lobbyists or good old power is once and for all dead.
If we could get the corruption out of politics...oh well.

2. I received one like that last week for our state
It was a shorty compared to most of the Z/polls. It did include that usual question about W's performance. He got the major

5. arnold isn't "fun" anymore. He has a reputation for trying to
take the pay away from teachers in order to balance the budget. I think he is widely and wisely seen as a real asshole now.

8. Thank heavens he's history (unless they diebold US)
I'm amazed at all these union commercials -- "you weren't the governor we thought you'd be". Well, duh. You know, if I was looking to hire an administrator for a vast corporation (such as the state of California), right off the top I'd start looking at muscle-bound bad actors. :eyes:

Maybe the Shrub will nominate him for the head of FEMA.

12. It's based on when you pick your state in the beginning of the poll...
I selected NJ, so all my questions were about the NJ Governor Race this year and the '06 Senate race next year.

:hi:

There really wasn't much to it: approve/disapprove of Bush, who would you vote for in Talent v. McCaskill. Apart from "defining yourself" demographically, that was about it.

Maria Cantwell versus some potential Repub contenders.
Just offhand it looked to be commissioned by the Repubs.

17. Would Beatty even have a chance? Does he have any political experience?
And although I personally couldn't care about anyones personal life, just my sense is that Beatty might have some skeletons in the closet.

Just a guess here, don't take this as knowledge of anything specific, it's just that his reputation certainly was for a very long time that of a ladies' man sort of guy. Wouldn't that hurt him in an election?

Of course, he still is quite attractive - maybe that's what it takes at this point to get elected to governor here.

23. Ladies man or not...
Beatty is way smarter than Reiner. Beatty's been involved politically forever and takes it seriously. I attribute his inclination not to run for office thus far to that & his awareness of the difficulty of being effective in government as an 'outsider' Collaboration's not a foreign concept to him.

And since when is a healthy libido a 'skeleton'?

16. I wouldn't read it that way

I would guess that Zogby is trying to draw out whether Schwarzenegger still has significant celebrity draw. (If the celebrity bit is shot then his head-to-head numbers against Angelides will come out equal to or higher than against Reiner or Beatty.)
