Tancredo, Bush Foe on Immigration, Poised as Republican Spoiler

Right-wing populists have bedeviled American political parties in presidential elections for more than 30 years. These include George Wallace in the 1960s and 70s, Patrick Buchanan in the 90s, and may include another such spoiler in 2008: Republican Tom Tancredo.

A U.S. representative from Colorado, Tancredo is the most vocal opponent in Congress of President George W. Bush's proposal to overhaul immigration policy with a guest worker program and has earned the enmity of Bush's chief political adviser, Karl Rove. Tancredo also has criticized the growth of federal spending under Bush and the lack of spending controls on the more than $62 billion appropriated to the Hurricane Katrina recovery.

Tancredo said he hopes one of the more establishment candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination in 2008 will adopt his anti-immigration stance. He recently met with Republican Virginia Senator George Allen, a possible presidential aspirant, to discuss immigration and said he came away mildly encouraged.

If none of the candidates make immigration a prominent part of the presidential debate in 2008, Tancredo said he would enter the race to draw attention to the issue.

This is a guy who could wind up making the GOP nominate someone that they're less than thrilled to support. This would split the bigot vote between him and Santorum, leaving them with someone the neocons don't really care about, thus, at least in part, nullifying the evangelist factor.

Let's face it - a lot of these people are going to be forced to choose between their love of god and their hatred of foreigners. As we've seen so many times, hate tends to win in Republican circles. It'll be enough to divide their allegiances among two candidates anyway, possibly enough that a true conservative might wind up winning.

That would not bode well for the GOP in the general election. You already hear that the extremists aren't happy that they're not completely getting their way. You think they're going to get energized for a godless infidel after they've given their support for nearly nothing?

Because then a moderate Republican will sneak through - - somebody who can package themselves as "a different kind of Republican", a "compassionate conservative" etc., etc., etc. the way Smirk did in 2000, to distance himself publicly from folks like Dick Armey and Tom Delay and Pat Robertson who were political liabilities even then.

We need to take a lesson from Gray Davis and support a united wackadoo vote in the GOP primary, so that the Republicans end up with an inexperienced, clueless nut job as their nominee, rather than a polished, centrist friendly pol.

I don't live in Xenophobic's district, thank God. I live in Diana DeGette's district. But I've seen uneasy feeling in the neighboring district (where Tancredo does have power), and they're getting ready to rid of the asshole. If he's unelectable here (except for his usual core of FoF assholes), then he's not gonna go anywhere.
