Katrina costs dividing the GOP

The Washington Post is reporting:

"Congressional Republicans from across the ideological spectrum yesterday rejected the White House's open-wallet approach to rebuilding the Gulf Coast, a sign that the lockstep GOP discipline that George W. Bush has enjoyed for most of his presidency is eroding on Capitol Hill..." read on

The GOP has been spending like drunken sailors all through Bush's presidency, but now Katrina hits, American lives are shattered and they are bickering like children which is throwing their whole agenda into turmoil. A few republicans are talking about raising taxes. One other fun note: "One indicator many Republicans are watching to gauge whether Bush is becoming a liability for the party is in Pennsylvania, where Rick Santorum, the No. 3 Republican in the Senate, is trailing state treasurer Bob Casey Jr. by double digits."

3. Uh oh, the Post wandering off the reservation?

Surely their reporters have been aware of the GOP lock-step "discipline" for some time, but they just didn't think it was very important to mention it until now, when it has finally begun to fracture?

So, what's been inflicted on the nation while the Post looked the other way? How many billions of dollars have been squandered because the Post couldn't be bothered to report on what was happening? How many thousands and thousands of lives were ended because the Post was more concerned about keeping its standing invitations to all the bestest cocktail parties than in being so gauche as to notice the bodies under the buffet table?

It will be interesting to see if the Post's prior silence will save them now.
