House Republicans Fail to Stand Up for Our Men and Women in Uniform
Washington, DC - Despite the mounting costs associated with Hurricane
Katrina relief efforts and plans to rebuild the Gulf Coast, Republicans
in Washington are determined to extend President Bush's tax cuts for
wealthy. To make matters worse, House Republicans this afternoon
proposed cutting vital programs, including health care and education for
our men and women in the military who are bravely serving their country
at home and abroad.
According to the Navy Times, "A group of House Republicans have
proposed a plan to offset the costs of relief and rebuilding after
Hurricane Katrina that includes trimming military quality-of-life
programs, including health care." Under the GOP proposal, "service
members would be offered cash if they are willing to accept reduced
health care benefits." Another Republican idea is to close the domestic
system of elementary and secondary schools for military family members.

"Once again, we're seeing Republicans in Washington, DC siding with
their wealthy cronies at the expense of our men and women in the
military and their families," said Democratic National Committee
spokesman Josh Earnest. "Democrats believe we need to change the
business-as-usual approach in Washington, D.C. and do more than pose for
photo-ops with our troops. Democrats will actually implement policies
that protect our troops and their families."
