U.S.: One-Party System in China Can't Last

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Bush administration urged China on Wednesday to begin a transition to democracy, contending the existing one-party system "is simply not sustainable."

Until now, the administration has focused its pro-democracy message on the Islamic world. Zoellick's speech was the most explicit call to date for a transition in China, where the Communist Party will mark the anniversary of its 56th year in power next week.

"Closed politics cannot be a permanent feature of Chinese society. It is simply not sustainable," Zoellick said in a speech to the National Committee on United States-China Relations in New York.

Zoellick said China "needs a political transition to make its government responsible and accountable to its people.

5. It's not about "one party". It's whether that party is reality-based.
Their one-party system appears to be much more reality-based than our current GOP-dominated system.

Zoellick might want to worry about the beam in our eye first.

Sometimes I think that is what we have here. Dems voting for Roberts etc. When will they stand up and fight. Better to fight and lose than wimper.
