This is frustrating. The Dems need to be way more out front in protecting the environment and standing against war.

8 years of Clinton/Gore and not one word about industrial hemp?...give me a break.

Top Democrats won't attend anti-war rally in Washington

BY STEVEN THOMMA

Knight Ridder Newspapers

WASHINGTON - (KRT) - As the anti-war movement arrives in Washington this weekend, many top Democrats are leaving.

Nationally known Democratic war critics, including Howard Dean, the chairman of the Democratic National Committee, and Sens. Hillary Rodham Clinton of New York, Russell Feingold of Wisconsin and John Kerry of Massachusetts, won't attend what sponsors say will be a big anti-war rally Saturday in Washington.

The only Democratic officeholders who plan to address the rally are Reps. Cynthia McKinney of Georgia and John Conyers of Michigan.

1. Don't mention the war
The chickenhawks are evenly matched with the chickens.
The future of democracy in the US does not include Republicans or Democrats. Twenty years from now, there will be other dominate parties.

2. agreed, so why do we still give them so much support?
If the dems never win again the people will still need another party because the repubs will destroy the US if they are not stopped. So how do we change the one party system we have now? I smell revolution and it will not include supporting the dems and expecting any real change. The Peak Oil and other issues will force this country to change its disastrous ways.

6. Sad but true.
I wish we had a system that encouraged and allowed multiple parties in this country, it would be WAY more representative of the People.

9. Let's start by pressuring our party to allow them into the debate
forum. Until we allow open debate forums instead of measuring the celebrity before the message is heard, this will be a country based on two party hegemony.

3. Conyers and McKinney. That's my dream ticket in '08. Call it the
"Courage and Brains Campaign". Who are the "top" Democrats trying to protect themselves from? The nearly 60% of the US public who are now against the war? Maybe it's the nearly 60% who disapprove of Bush's job so far? Who the hell are they trying to "triangulate" this time? Shit...

4. Do a lookup...
...on other articles by Steven Thomma.

I'm glad they aren't going. This should be an ANTI-WAR rally, not a pro-Democrats rally, or anything except ending the war in Iraq. I'll be happy if ending the war in Iraq is the sole focus of this march, but in the event it isn't, most elected representatives will avoid being associated with it.

5. They are?
Edited on Fri Sep-23-05 08:02 AM by tasteblind
Coulda fooled me.

But seriously, the reasons why they aren't coming are:

1. They don't support bringing the troops home immediately.

2. They don't want to be seen as endorsing ANSWER, which is a pretty extreme outfit by Democratic Party standards.

3. They already have tee times and couldn't reschedule.

8. How many Green national officeholders are going?
And you can add Republicans for Greens, since a Green vote just goes to the Republicans anyway.

12. It's disgusting
it's really true that they are afraid of their own shadows. The thing that is even more upsetting is that they are legitimizing the words of Rove when he said recently that no "serious" politician would attend an anti-war rally.

we really really need to give as much support as we can to McKinney and Conyers.
