2. Your choices are:
A.) Violent Revolution. - Dumb idea. Try that and they get to shoot you. Take a look at some of the groups in the early 70's that tried it. Remember, about half the country voted for him, so you would have lots of people against you. And even most progressive won't join you. Your revolution will be very lonely.

B.) Wait. Concentrate on winning 2006 and 2008.

There ARE no other options. Republicans will not vote to impeach or to convict if impeached. Conviction requires 67 votes in the Senate.

5. Things change over time...

The changes of the sixties didn't happen overnight. It took years to gain enough momentum to really force change. So, it's not an either or proposition - it's what are you doing to NOW to bring that change about?

Every little bit helps. I can donate to causes I believe in, I can encourage others, I can participate in events.

8. I don't bet on one card outs.
Edited on Sat Sep-24-05 09:47 PM by Silverhair
My statement about W staying in office is a probability statement, just as your statement about going to bed was a probability statement.

I play poker for a living, and have done that for years. If I always bet on the side of the probabilities, I will win - in the long term. I never knowing bet against the odds for that is the way to go broke.

The odds are extremely strong that W will serve his full term. In hoping that something will happen to remove him, you are grasping at straws.

A conviction on an impeachment takes 67 votes in the Senate. No way that can happen.

10. What people often overlook, and some refuse to face...
..and by "refuse to face" I mean if you bring it up your post or thread will be flamed until it is locked, is that even if you vote out the repukes, you have a huge fascist power & support structure in the Pentagon, the various law enforcement agencies, the various intelligence communities, the military, the courts and among the wealthy and in the corporations. This structure has been systematically and methodically built, rebuilt, strengthened and made more and more efficient via trial and error in governments and counties all across the globe since the late 1800s.

Whatever Dem manages to win in '08 will have to take all of that on. They will have to dismantle it. Or, they become an appeasement government, a caretaker for the fascists. They will also be a huge target for constant vilification, and maybe elimination.

The election is important, but it's just one small part.

13. Nixon: Won In A Landslide
for his second term, and within two years, did the "perp walk" from the White House....I remember the time well when he could do no wrong. Because I saw that, it is not that hard to see the same thing happening now...

In a way it is ironic, because the country was far from divided, it was, if anything, together (for Nixon) in a lot of ways....

Think about it and keep that in your thoughts...

16. Good point..

I think I've only voted for a Republican once -- a local person, who my dad told me to vote for as an exception.

Trip to the voting booth is usually pretty short for me -- straight democrat.

20. Think About This As Well
There was still a far more unified country than there is today. I am saying that Nixon was accepted by the majority, even so. I keep that perp walk in my head, because he won in a landslide, this is the point. I remember being stunned while watching that. He won by a freakiin' landslide! This means over half the Dems crossed the aisle to vote for him. While I am sure the sharks smelled blood, I would also say it was not that easy to convince The People that he should impeached. Besides that, many enemies have been made right within the fold in this administration, as it was in Nixon's. In Bush's case IF he actually won, it was by a hair and if there isn't something done pretty soon, even Repigs are going to have to heed the Voices whose murmer is slowly rising into a roar.

Something is going to happen and it ain't going to be pretty...

My two cents...

P.S. The Press was playing dumb then too

21. At his core, Nixon was a patriot.
A very misguided patriot to be sure, but still he had a love for this country.

In 1960, as evidence was rapidly surfacing that the election had been stolen from him, he told his party to stop, and not fight it. Such a fight, he believe, would badly damage the office, no matter who won. He did not want to tear the country apart, so he conceeded defeat. At that time he placed the country above his own abition.

After Watergate, when impeachment by a DEMOCRATIC house looked like a real possibility, he again chose not to fight. Had he fought, he would have been able to stay in office, as 67 votes are needed for a successful impeachment. But again, he chose NOT to put the country throught it.

Is W a patriot who would step down? It takes a majority in the house to bring a bill of impeachment and a 2/3 majority in the senate for conviction. There is no way that we will have a 2/3 majority in the senate.

W will be in office until Jan 20, 2009. You are betting on a one card out if you think he will leave before then.

9. The Order of Succession
Cheney
Hastert
Stevens
Rice
Snow
Rumsfeld
Gonzoles

Even if you can get Bush and Cheney out of office, what makes you think the rest of the Order of Succession will be able to be impeached? You're replacing the Bush "regime" with other members of the Bush regime. While the spirit is commendable, its not very practical or likely.

14. No, it's time to concentrate on 2006. That's not sitting on our asses.
Unless Bush resigns (which is a infinitesimal possibility — Republican politics is not the same as it was in the time of Nixon), he will be there until 2009. But we can get more Democrats into office in 2006, which will make him a very lame duck.

I'm just saying that impeachment is not a plausible scenario. The 2006 Senate Elections, however, are.
