Military to Bush: U.S. needs search-rescue plan
BATON ROUGE, La. - President Bush on Sunday wrapped up a three-day trip designed to convey hands-on leadership during the Gulf Coast hurricanes, promising to act on military leaders’ request for a national search-and-rescue strategy.

“It’s precisely the kind of information that I’ll take back to Washington to help all of us understand how we can do a better job in coordinating federal, state and local response,” Bush told commanders.

<snip> (insert strong drink in hand here)

Bush indicated that he wants more authority for the armed forces in natural disasters, The military is barred by law now from performing any domestic law enforcement functions. Bush first broached that idea in a speech to the nation from New Orleans last week.

The president said he wants to examine whether the Defense Department should be the lead in a natural disaster “of a certain size” as they would after any terrorist attack. “That’s going to be a very important consideration for Congress to think about,” he said..."

As they would after any terrorist attack? No thanks, Smirk. I'll take care of me and mine, instead of waiting around for you to finish yet another one of your vacations.

1. Reading that carefully...

"Bush indicated that he wants more authority for the armed forces in natural disasters, The military is barred by law now from performing any domestic law enforcement functions."

It is an excuse for what happened in New Orleans.

3. It's called the Coast Guard and the Coast Guard Reserve!
The most useful, most efficient, and most underfunded of the four services has been doing S&R for centuries. If they were adequately equipped and funded, and supplemented by Reservists and Auxilliary personnel, the Coast Guard can handle it. Just get the Homeland Security fasict fucks, including Chertoff, off their backs.

5. the coast guard is now under HOMELAND SECURITY
on Friday, Sept. 23, as 10 cuban refugees approached the coast of halauver beach, fla., in a homemade boat, the coast guard tried to intercept them. the cubans (who had no clothes other than what they were wearing, no weapons, a riggidy old boat), pushed the coast guard away with their feet and hands every time that the coast guard tried to board their boat... until HOMELAND SECURITY and its patrol boat came with four men in it, dressed in the blue uniform of the HOMELAND SECURITY paramilitary, one of them had drawn his gun--but did not point it at any of the cubans, as far as those shots that were televised, and it was at that moment when the HOMELAND SECURITY PATROL BOAT came to the scene and the cubans saw the armed paramilitary, that they seemed to become fearful, the Coast Guard was eventually able to bump their boat, threw about four of them overboard, and the Cubans surrendered to the Coast Guard. ---Now, the interesting thing is that people watching the live shots of this interception are the ones who got to see HOMELAND SECURITY in action. Later, in the afternoon news, there was no mention of HOMELAND SECURITY, NO REPLAYS OF ANY SHOTS SHOWING THEIR BOAT AND THEIR PARAMILITARY, and ... in the snippet that appeared in the newspaper, in partnership with the t.v. station which had broadcast the live interception, there also, was NO MENTION of the HOMELAND SECURITY PARAMILITARY.

During that live interview The Coast Guard Office that the t.v. crew was talking to, mentioned, in answer to a question, that the Coast Guard is now a branch under HOMELAND SECURITY.

Wake Up America. This is Bush's JACKBOOTED NATION. this is no longer the u.s.a ANY OF US GREW UP IN.

Militarization of the US homeland: the more you ask, the more you shall receive
Given the fact that the Bush administration is a criminal organization, it is naïve and ignorant to expect it to behave in a humanitarian fashion. For any reason. Ever.

On the other hand, it is predictable that it would seize every opportunity, and take advantage of every moment of chaos, vulnerability and inattention, to sink its poisonous fangs deeper into the carcass of American democracy.

To those who have complained about this administration’s response to Hurricane Katrina, here is its response: Historic changes possible in military's role in domestic emergencies

6. Pull FEMA and the Coast Guard out of FaterLand Sekuirity and
Make FEMA the cabinet level department it was since its founding by Jimmy Carter. Put the Coast Guard under FEMA. It is the most natural place for them. Far better than the military, which they may physically resemble, but for which they have little affinity. Make the had of FEMA a political appointee - but one that is a PROFESSIONAL (a la James Lee Witt) - and put the head of the Coast Guard as the number two guy in FEMA.

FEMA will spend much more time on natural disasters than it ever will on 'terruh'.
