For every second of last year, we expended 57 bullets.
That's 3,420 Bullets a Minute
205,200 an hour
4,924,800 a day
147,744,000 a month
1,772,928,000 Bullets a year
We've expended so many rounds, we have to borrow some from Israel just to keep up with demand. This is enough ammunition to kill every single person in the following countries and still have enough to fight off any civil discontent here in America:
India
Pakistan
Afghanistan
Iraq
Iran
Saudi Arabia
Israel
Egypt
Jordan
Syria
Lebanon
Qatar
Turkey
Tajikistan
Uzbekistan
Kazakhstan
Kyrgyzstan
Uzbekistan
Venezuela
This 1.8 billion rounds is only 1 year of "fighting". So either we're really lousy shots or we're killing a lot more people than any estimate we can conjure out of thin air. Of course, there is a possibility that many of these rounds have found themselves sold on the black market but we must not speak of such things. The article below states that this is due to an increase of training but 1.8 billion? Come on! Anyway, just thought I'd share the numbers on where our money is being spent.
http://news.independent.co.uk/world/americas/article314944.ece"US forces have fired so many bullets in Iraq and Afghanistan - an estimated 250,000 for every insurgent killed - that American ammunition-makers cannot keep up with demand. As a result the US is having to import supplies from Israel.
A government report says that US forces are now using 1.8 billion rounds of small-arms ammunition a year. The total has more than doubled in five years, largely as a result of the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as changes in military doctrine.
John Pike, director of the Washington military research group GlobalSecurity.org, said that, based on the GAO's figures, US forces had expended around six billion bullets between 2002 and 2005. "How many evil-doers have we sent to their maker using bullets rather than bombs? I don't know," he said."
