2006 Congressional
Election Information
Election Day is November 7, 2006. Before then, state parties will have held conventions and many states will have held major-party primaries and perhaps even runoffs. In addition to candidacies and
candidate fund-raising that commence in 2005, the earliest filing deadlines begin in December 2005 in Illinois, unless state law is changed.
Announcements of incumbent members’ plans and of challengers can occur early. As of March 2005, four representatives and one senator had announced their intention to run for a different office,
and two representatives and two senators had announced their retirements from Congress.
The methods by which major-party and independent- or third-party candidates get their names on the general-election ballot are different in each state. Minimally, registration dates will differ from state to state, and congressional primary dates in some states are different in years in which the state holds a presidential primary than in the non-presidential election years. In addition, between each general election, some number of states amend their election laws.
The web sites of the secretaries of state’s election divisions or the independent state election boards provide a variety of information: important dates for registration and primaries, links to state
and federal laws, past election statistics, and candidate lists, among other election-related information and links. For the reader’s convenience, a telephone number for each state’s election authority is
provided below, in addition to each state’s election authority’s web site.
