That's over 2,500 registered Republicans who wrote in a Democrat in their ballot.

That's got to scare the shit out of Rove.

This is almost certainly true. It was directly observed by the
Dean campaigners working the polls in Nashua. Many people, when
handed a Republican ballot, tried to hand it back and take a
Democratic ballot. By law, enrolled Republicans can't do so,
and when this was explained to them, many of them simply
handed back the Republican ballot and walked away.

8. Not registered Republicans- could be Independents

Independents can vote in either primary. Some Democrat-leaning independents decided to throw their vote away by voting in the Republican primary. Just like some Repub-leaning independents cast a write-in for Bush in the Democratic primary.

In my local town, sometimes Democrats will vote in the Republican primary because they want to vote for Sheriff or such.

There is a separate NH Primary for all of other NH
offices on September 14th. The only elections held
yesterday were for the Republican and Democratic
President and Vice President.

There is much more motivation for a Repub leaning I to write in Bush in the Dem primary, since their dog already has the primary locked up.

In an important Dem race, someone interested in the Dems would surely use his/her voice where it mattered.

Yes, but why would Dem-leaning I's do that?

In NH, most "Undeclared" voters are, in fact, outright
Libertarians or Republican-leaning. There's a long history
of "cross-over voting" for the purposes of throwing a
spanner or three into the other party's gears.
