WASHINGTON — Peace mom Cindy Sheehan (search) didn't change her opposition to the war in Iraq after meeting Tuesday with one of its supporters, Sen. John McCain (search) a Vietnam veteran whom she called "a warmonger."

Sheehan thanked McCain for meeting with her, but she came away disappointed.

"He tried to tell us what George Bush (search) would have said," Sheehan, who protested at the president's Texas home over the summer, told reporters. "I don't believe he believes what he was telling me."

McCain, R-Ariz., also seemed disappointed in the meeting, which he said had been misrepresented as including some of his constituents. Only one person in her small delegation has ties to the state, and that person no longer lives there.

Why are so many on the left enamoured with him? He's a right winger who occassionally strays from the plantation....but only when it benefits HIM politically. As a so-called "maverick" he wins the prize for MEDIA whore of all time.

7. Does anyone expect a change of mind

after meeting with Cindy or do they expect to change Cindy's mind? I don't think so. I think it's hurting more than helping when someone agrees to meet Cindy. I would guess that anyone meeting her would say "I'm sorry you lost your son" and that's about it.

10. I think it's a trap somewhat of our own making

For weeks, Democrats knocked Bush for not meeting with Sheehan. She had already met with him once. I think it was tone deaf that LAURA didn't invite her in for tea and cake. In the house, Bush could say what he has to mother's who support him - that he griefs with them but he was acting in the way he felt best for the country (possibly even adding the election was a referendum). (Insincere, probably - but it would have diffused the situation.)

Now, all the Senators and Congressmen are being subjected to the same thing. Again, offering sympathy is the best action. I doubt any Senator will change their views due to a meeting. It may be uncomfortable, but even Clinton's meeting shouldn't hurt her - she was sympathetic, but she should follow her intellect in her view of what should be done. (Her actual position itself will either hurt or help her). On the Republican side, McCain will likely get credit for meeting with her and honestly stating his opinion face to face.
