WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday unanimously elected Roy Blunt of Missouri as their majority leader, replacing Tom DeLay, who was forced to step down after being indicted by a Texas grand jury, lawmakers said.
After a closed-door meeting of House Republicans, lawmakers said Blunt's position was an interim arrangement for the rest of the year and that he would share some leadership responsibilities with Rep. David Dreier of California. Blunt had been the third-ranking Republican member of the House with the title of majority whip.
House Speaker Dennis Hastert said Dreier, the chairman of the House Rules Committee, will "help move the agenda on the House floor." Colleagues said Dreier would coordinate the flow of legislation with committee chairmen.
House Democrats jumped on the day's developments, ramping up their criticism of Republican ethics problems.
"The criminal indictment of Majority Leader Tom Delay is the latest example that Republicans in Congress are plagued by a culture of corruption at the expense of the American people," said Rep. Nancy Pelosi of California, the House Democratic leader.
But some warned that the indictment was bad for Congress, not just for Republicans. New York Democrat Charles Rangel questioned whether some members of the public "will see Republican wrongdoing or a crooked Congress."
But Republicans praised DeLay, who received an ovation at the party meeting, and many predicted he would be exonerated from what they described as a politically motivated prosecution.
"We all believe that he (DeLay) will return once this indictment is out of the way, and be the leader again," Blunt said.

THE Prime Minister's son, Euan Blair, has beaten around 100,000 hopefuls to secure an internship with a Republican congressman who is accused by gay rights campaigners of leading a double life.
Euan is to work for David Dreier on Capitol Hill in Washington.
The coveted intern posts often go to the most academically gifted, but connections are equally important. For a foreigner to be given an internship is highly unusual as the roles often go to graduates from the congressman's local district.
Euan, an ancient history graduate of Bristol University, has expressed an interest in entering politics and was a keen observer of the general election.
Downing Street confirmed the British embassy was involved in setting up the internship "for obvious security reasons".
Although Mr Blair is known for his strong relationship with President George Bush, the appointment raised eyebrows among Democrats.
Eric Burns, a spokesman for Democrat congresswoman Louise Slaughter, told a Sunday newspaper that the Washington rules committee, chaired by Mr Dreier, was one of the most partisan.
He said: "It is extremely surprising that the son of a Labour prime minister would intern with the Republican majority staff on the committee."
Mr Dreier, who will be the 21-year-old's mentor during his internship
