"The statewide rumor mill is buzzing with reports that Lowell Weicker is considering an independent run for his old U.S. Senate seat next year against Democratic incumbent Joe Lieberman of New Haven (for now). Lieberman deposed former Weicker in 1988 with the help of his famous sleeping bear commercial--a commercial Weicker could now turn back on his old nemesis.

The rumors have been building since last week, when Weicker appeared at a public forum with radio talk-show host and Courant columnist Colin McEnroe. Weicker, a former liberal Republican who turned independent in 1990 when he left the Senate to run successfully for governor, dropped notice at the Sept. 20 forum that he'd consider another political run.

Weicker claimed he's "99 percent" uninterested in running. But then he went on, and on, about how wouldn't sit by if "somebody pisses me off enough." And he went on and on about how pissed off he is about the direction of the country.

His candidacy sounded like more than a 1 percent consideration in his mind. And it looked that way when his longtime political aide Tom D'Amore showed up at the gathering."

Remember, Lieberman took out Weicker from the right, and any Wicker run would take on Lieberan on the war. Weicker is an opponent of Bush's War. Lieberman is one of its chief enablers. But really, the chances of this happening are as slight as DeLay being indicted.

So, would he caucus with the Dems like Jeffords? Would he run as an Independent in the General election and split the Democratic vote, letting a Republican win?

Just a couple questions off the top of my head. Interesting...

I'd vote for him against Lieberman in a heartbeat. Even if Weicker ran as a republican.

He is just another puppet, and is bad for the party.

Getting rid of the fake and bad dems will make our party more effective.

Why is it that even when the republicans are in the minority they wield more power than the dems?

9. He's more a Dem than Joe L.

I'm not sure he caucus with the Dems (he probably would). But he definitely wouldn't caucus with the 'Pubs. I don't think he'd peacefully coexist (like Snowe and Collins and Chafee do) with the southern pubs. They'll hate him and it'll be mutual.

BTW, did Lieberman beat him by a lot in 88? What was the margin? Is Weicker popular in the state?

CT is a relatively liberal state. It deserves a better senator. But Joe would be tough to beat. He has high approval ratings.

among Republicans and Democrats in CT.

The chances of Lieberman being beat are slim to none.

He's too old for the job. Not only that, but such an "indie" run would guarantee the Democratic vote would be split, and a REAL Republican would get elected.

I would love to see him back in the Senate. I can't believe that he would not caucus with the Democrats if he was there as an independent.
