CNN: "Bush's poll numbers up" (Rita photo ops and "stabilized" gas prices)
Bush's poll numbers up
Hurricane preparations, stabilizing gas prices help

Thursday, September 29, 2005; Posted: 5:40 p.m. EDT (21:40 GMT)

http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/09/29/bush.poll/index.html

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush's standing with the public improved over the previous week as he made a highly visible effort to manage the consequences of the second major hurricane to hit the Gulf Coast in a month, a new poll out Thursday found.

Bush's job approval rating in the latest CNN/USA Today/Gallup poll climbed to 45 percent, and 71 percent said they approved of his handling of Hurricane Rita, which struck land Saturday near the Texas-Louisiana border.

By comparison, only 40 percent said they approved of his handling of Hurricane Katrina, which hit near the Louisiana-Mississippi line August 29. The poll surveyed 1,007 adults between Monday and Wednesday, and had a margin of error of 5 percentage points.

A similar poll released last week found only 40 percent approved of Bush's job performance, and 41 percent approved of his handling of Katrina. An easing of public concern over gasoline prices also appeared to have contributed to the upward bump in Bush's poll numbers.

President Bush's approval rating improved after his highly visible hurricane preparations last week.

Whoopee! Prices are stable high.
However, prices are heading higher again in the next few days since wholesale prices have gone apeshit.

19. Gas prices went up 20 cents literally overnight
all over NW Ohio between Wednesday and Thursday.

Stabilized gas prices? Consider the source.

23. The local gas price
On my way to the grocery store this afternoon the price was up to $2.799. It was $2.699 yesterday. On my way back from the store it was up to $2.899. Stablized my ear.

29. Gov. Perdue had rescinded the gas tax until Sept. 30
here in Georgia. It expires at midnight. The average price this morning is $2.89 to $2.99. I hate to see what it is going to be by tomorrow morning.

2. STOP POSTING THIS CRAP!
There are at least 10 other posts with this shit. Gallup leans to the right. Their polling methods are biased towards Chimpy.

27. You won't get people to stop
It doesn't matter how many times you outline the facts for them with respect to Gallup- even people who are educated enough to know better still believe in these polls. A pretty sad commentary on America, I think.

3. Just wait
The DeLay effect has yet to show in the polls. Then we will have Frist to thank for helping the GOP dive even lower.

4. Gee, gas jumped $.30 here this week.
And chimpy sitting in a chair with his sleeves rolled up nodding his head, looking like he'd rather be ANYWHERE but where he was, made his numbers go up? Fat chance.

7. And Rita wasn't a cat 5, didn't do as much damage
but they played it up so that it could look like bush actually did something. They knew damn well it wasn't going to be a big deal.

If I didn't know better, I'd almost think they "ordered up" Rita as damage control to Katrina.

Second chances aren't a common thing.

22. I wouldn't call 45% "high marks."
As for the 71% approval rating on Rita, the people of the Gulf Coast were a little luckier this time. Rita wasn't as savage as anticipated and Bush actually made an effort to do his job.

Notice that the approval rating on Katrina has remained pretty stable.

12. Recent Gallup Numbers Here
Edited on Thu Sep-29-05 06:56 PM by npincus
Gallup's Chimp-approval numbers look like a bit of a rollercoaster these past weeks: 45-40-45-46-40-NOW 45... I don't know if I'd go blowing my trumpet yet, Chimpy.

Delay hasn't impacted, and then there's Fitzgerald....

for the SCOTUS that will produce a "Bench Clearing Brawl"

To keep the focus away from Iraq, Fitzerald, Delay, etc

18. This is a president whose approval has seen huge bounces in the past.
After 9-11, his approval bounced into the high 80s. Then his numbers slowly began to sink.

After the invasion of Iraq, his approval bounced into the 70s. Then, once again, his numbers slowly began to sink.

After the capture of Saddam, his approval bounced into the 60s. Then, once again, his numbers slowly began to sink.

After last year's election, his approval bounced into the 50s. Then, once again, his numbers slowly began to sink.

After Hurricane Rita, his approval jumped from 40% to 45%.

Every time Bush has a bounce, it's smaller than the last one. And after every bounce, he sinks a little further.

His bounces are becoming less like bounces and more like thuds.

20. What stabilized gas prices!! Mine just went from @2.79 to $3.19!
in the space of a couple of days.

Gads, the American people are a cheap date, aren't they. A photo op or two and they're ready to hop back in the sack.

28. Who do these people poll??????????
I figure there's 20% who would support Bush even if he sacrificed virgins on live TV while munching broiled baby, but what's with the remaining 25% in this poll? Are they making bucks off big oil or something?
