Clark endorsed by Washington Blade (DC gay paper)

Many of the gay activists who have so ardently supported Dean’s candidacy have not even given the race a second look since the late entry of WESLEY CLARK, the former NATO commander whose positions on gay issues are indistinguishable from those of the former Vermont governor.

Clark’s advantages over Dean are numerable: His military record and upbeat campaign make him much more electable, especially in regions where Dean’s angry rhetoric falls flat, as it did in Iowa. As a former military leader, Clark speaks with greater authority on “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” than Dean, who skipped Vietnam over a supposed bad back to go skiing for six months.

Like Dean, Clark talks with what appears to be complete comfort about gay issues and has been accessible to the gay press, including not just this newspaper but the Advocate, and Sirius Satellite Radio’s OutQ network. In each of those interviews, he has not just taken positions but promised “leadership.”

1. Clark talks the talk, Dean walks the walk
Dean passed civil unions. Clark hasn't done squat but talk. Who cares what the "Blade" thinks?

4. Dean signed a bill.
The VT legislature walked the walk.

7. and to a person
everyone involved says, for good or for ill, had Dean not led that bill never would have passed. That was the one issue that all three candidates for governor in 2000 agreed on.

10. the Vermont legislature took the easy way out in passing civil unions
the Vermont legislature took the easy way out in passing civil unions

Dean took the easy way out in signing them into law.

if he wanted to really to do something, he would have tried to get gay marriages passed

the Vermont Supreme Court ordered that something be done, and they took the lesser way out

12. Please don't spin
The Constitution could have been changed and you know that. If you don't know that then you should. Our rights are too important for you to tell tales and not facts. BTW the MA court ordered marriage in 180 days. I don't see it.

2. A very noce endorsement for Clark!
I'm sure the many readers of the Blade in Washington, VA, and MD will be happy to see that endorsement. It's one of the mose widely-read (and influential) gay publications in the country.

6. Great!
How about getting those log cabin repukes to switch parties and back Clark? Any talk of that in the gay press?

Clark CAN win and it would be very good to have as many minorities with him as possible; he has special subgroups for African American supporters and Jewish supporters - I'd love to see one for gay supporters.

And, to the anti-Clark people, no, this is not a call for fractionalization: this is a call for all the people to get behind Clark!

11. It's amazing what happens when a handsome dude in uniform runs for office.
I'd say Clark can count on the gay vote through hellfire and brimstone. Good for the General! :)

Later.

13. ?
"It's amazing what happens when a handsome dude in uniform runs for office." methinks that's a tad offensive, but, then again, I'm sensitive
