217,962 people voted in the Democratic NH primary--

in the General election Gore received 266,348 votes in NH. That means in the NH primary we had a turnout--in a primary--that was 82% of what our candidate got in the general election in the last presidential election. That is HUGE!!

This turnout is indicative that Bush is in real trouble.

16. This is huge, and seems to be getting lost in the news

Everyone is all a-twitter over whether "their" candidate won or lost or what happened, not many are seeing this.

This is huge, it explains the unexpected results in the last two primaries, I suspect pollsters are vastly underestimating who will be "likely voters."

It explains what has happened to the "dean phenomenon." Yes, he energized the base, but something far bigger is happening, middle of the roaders are voting motivated primarily by an "anyone but Bush" feeling.

The last time New Hampshire turnout was this high, 1992, another president named Bush was run out of office, to be forever known as the "one term wimp." Looks like we may see the never-elected one term idiot joining him in infamy.

I do beleive this high turnout is a huge sign, that people who ordinarily never vote will be voting, and voting against Bush, in huge numbers in the general election. I think its fantastic. The single biggest demographic in american politics are the non-voters (the greens based their delusional Nader hopes on them), and it looks like they are going to be coming out and voting democratic this year.

A corollary to these observations, this is the converse of the situation where you have a popular incumbent president. In those cases, the opposition party votes in low numbers, and its only the true beleivers who come out, the far left and far right respectively. These few true beleivers then nominate someone at the extreme of their spectrume, a McGovern or Goldwater or Dukakis or Mondale, which just makes matters worse, and the election is a blowout.

I would love to have the time to do a statistical analysis of primary turnout versus election results against incumbent presidents, it might be interesting.

No offense to Dean, but he would be winning right now if Bush were popular. But Bush isn't popular, so there are many more people going to the polls than the usual hardcore party members, and all these "anyone but Bush" votes are resulting in what you see happening. I would bet Zogby's ridiculous "Dean surging" poll results came about because he did a bad job of deciding who were the "likely voters," and failed to take into account the anti-Bush animus that is increasing turnout.

But when people are unhappy with the incumbent, many more people vote in the primary, they choose someone with broader appeal simply because there is a broader spectrum of people showing up at the polls, and they go on to humiliate the loser president and make him a one termer.

In 1992 - 168,000 turnout

More dems and independents turned out period.

My family is in NH, they attended Kerry, Clark and Edwards events. Supporters of all the candidates were at these events. While people supported different candidates, they all talked to each other - and said ABB.
