However, when the nomination is picked - I'm ABB all the way and I have a strong suspicion that Dean will be too!!!

2. You are rushing things too much

People need time to grieve and reassess when and if that happens. If folks here on anyone's bandwagon want their support after a candidate backs out they should give them a little breathing room.

You don't ask someone what qualities they would like in a second spouse while they are still married to the first.

No way of knowing who the people who say they would help elect Bush by supporting a third party candidate or by staying home really support. They could be Bush supporters for all we know. I would not automatically blame Dean supporters.

I'll enthusiastically support whomever the nominee is, but until then, no reason for me (and many others I would imagine) to get into it. What difference does it make if we nominate Kerry or Edwards, or Lieberman or Clinton? Still, I will be energized by the goal of re-defeating Bush and -- let's be honest -- any of our candidates is an improvement on what is in there now, so count me in.

That said,

We've got big problems as a party, folks, and this year hasn't done much to foster unity, I'm afraid. For one thing, we seem to have a dearth of leadership. If you doubt it, look at all the people who pushed General Clark into the race. Is our party that bereft that we have to yank an erstwhile non-partisan into the top of our party? Apparently millions think so! (That was not meant as a slam on Clark - he is an outstanding American and would be a great President, I'm sure.) I find it troubling, however, that it would ever come to this.

Additionally, there remain troublesome splits on a number of fronts (geography, insider/outsider, IWR, tax policy, others) and I'm not certain any candidate unite us in spite of it all, but I think Dean has (had?) the best chance. Love him or hate him (apparently there are few undecided) he is a breath of fresh air, reminding many of us how exciting hope can be.

While I'm grumbling, the Democratic insiders & regulars have become obsessed with the so-called swing voters "what can we be for, that will appeal to THEM? - who can we nominate that will not repulse THEM?". While useful in the past, to elect Clinton & Gore for example, it has had a terrible effect on the rest of the ticket in presidential & mid-term years, not to mention the confusion to the actual members of the party. Many of us are wondering what it means to be a Democrat. This does not bode well for '04 and beyond. I'm only 37; I got a lot of elections left in me. It pains me to think that it won't matter.

If this offends, please disregard, I'm feeling crabby lately.

BTW, I hope I am wrong about all of this. I would love to be wrong about this.

does he not represent a change from what's wrong with all the insiders? yes i know he's 'unelectable' but if it's going to be one of the insiders, why not at least go to Kucinich so that those insiders will have to take note that they need to change their ways, because the people who want change aren't going to just go away.

Listen, DK is a great American and an important member of our side. He seems to lack the leadership thing. That's a real problem - maybe it's unfair, but it is real.

It's not enough to be right, plurality - our candidate has to be able to LEAD.

Let us not forget that he LED the Dems in Congress against the IWR. Before he began organizing there were only 16 Dems planning on voting against that resolution, and he LED 123 of them to vote against it. I'd say that right there is a good show of leadership.

I'm discouraged as hell.

A tiny number of Democrats in Iowa and Hew Hampshire (a sliver of the population of the nation), plus some Independents and Republicans and the media have chosen the apparent nominee. That nominee is in the process of writing off the entire region of the country where I live. What say do I have in it? Almost none.

In the general election I can vote (or not) for anyone I want, because my state will go for Bush anyway.

I should have saved my thread from about 8 months ago where I said I was worried that a nice sized chunk of the Dean supporters were Dean or Nobody or were Dean or Green. I was summarily flamed and insulted and told to "PROVE IT!!! PROVE IT!!!!!" and told that Dean supporters were Democrats first and foremost.

I realize this isn't a scientific poll, nor is it ALL Dean supporters. But considering how much of a new A-hole I had torn for me that day because of that one post, 34% doesn't exactly prove me wrong.
