I think Dean would've been a great president, but all of a sudden, he's fatally-flawed. I know some of my fellow Dean supporters will jump all over me for that statement, but hold your fire a moment. It comes down to that thing about perception being reality. It has nothing to do with objective truth. I really think he would've been a great president, but he's going to have a really tough road ahead. I don't imagine he'll be bringing much more money into the coffers at this point.
But for me, it was never about hero worship, never about the man. Rather, it was about what the candidate could bring to the office, what he could do for the country. I measure all the candidates against a set of ideals that they'll never achieve. Kucinich comes closest, but that's not happening. So I thought Howard Dean was the best compromise. But his candidacy is becoming less realistic every day. It's a sad story, and he's gotten a raw deal, but it's a story about one person, and I need to attach more importance to a story about 300,000,000 people.
So I'm thinking Kerry will necessarily be my replacement for Howard Dean. I take comfort in the oft-repeated argument about him being more liberal than Howard Dean. I very much disagree with some of his votes, and with some of his statements. But I think he has a long record of pretty progressive behavior. And I think he can kick the holy hell out of Bush.
Edwards would be OK also. Not my favorite, but I'd do cartwheels all the way to the voting booth to pull the lever for him were he to be the nominee.
Clark? Well, I wouldn't be too thrilled about voting for him, but if that was my only choice, I'd certainly do it.
By the way, thanks for your accomodating tone. It's not much fun having to shop for another candidate, and it's not made any easier with the hard-sell, with the constant badmouthing of Howard Dean, and so on.
For now, I'm keeping my Dean logo. I guess I'm stubborn.
