it is his base which has kept Bush politically alive
The right is even stronger with * than they were with Reagan--certainly more than Poppy. Look at the polls, he gets 90% plus percent of the GOP vote--that is why he is leading the way he is. To win the Democratic nominee will need to break that and attract at least 15% of the GOP vote. So far, none of our candidates are doing this. Yet Bush routinely gets 15-25 percent of the Democratic vote based on poll.

2. I've heard that too, but also heard some rumblings
some conservatives I've talked to aren't completely sold on his policies (international and fiscal).

I really think less people approve of him than we are hearing about

9. re apathy, i agree
but i continue to make the case that certain candidates will make the prospect of the republicans re-energizing their base far easier - at the same time making our ability to take the center far more difficult.

GOTV is tough - and if we managed it it would be amazing, because all those districts are gerrymandered to the point that if we simply turned out an extra 10% there would be a revolution. Of course, that's ALWAYS been the case - and we dems have sucked at GOTV for decades.

3. Actually, I think they fear what a 'liberal' might do so much
that they blindly accept Bush's version of everything. We need to work against that internal bias. We need to clearly demonstrate why unions are good, but also free/fair trade is good. How all these issues they fear, only the Democratic party can honestly address them in a rational manner that is beneficial for our nation.

I'm not saying that will always be the case, but for the next decade I'm willing to bet the farm on it.

10. Here's an example:
Dec 21, 2003
Letter to the Editor, the Advocate:

In the December Charisma magazine, on the letters page, there are five letters out of seven that are so hateful and venomous toward our president that they sadden me.

He is a wonderful, born-again Christian leader trying to prevent another 9/11 from happening on our shores and helping to liberate the oppressed people of Iraq.

The people who call him evil and want to stop and defeat all his efforts are of the world and not of God.

He was put in power by our Creator for such a time as this.

Jesus said it all in John 15:16-19. Read it.

I know President Bush goes to God in prayer every day, and in humble obedience, he prays for wisdom and guidance to try and solve problems he faces and bring some sanity to this chaotic world we are living in.

I love him and am so proud of him.

God is in control, and we, as his people, know this battle is between good and evil for souls.

snip

This is the mentality we have to deal with. Sickening.

13. You Know My Father... Don't You??
He sees Dubya as a Christ-like figure. My dad has a fucking photo of Bush* on the wall of his den.

My dad is so "proud" that we 'finally have a moral president who isn't ashamed to be a Christian'... blah-blah-blah.... it makes me feel nauseous.

Odd... my dad doesn't consider himself to be a "fundamentalist Christian". But he certainly behaves like one. Christianity has certainly changed him for the WORSE!
