Better minds than mine have already thought of this, but...(DeLay)
Edited on Mon Jan-09-06 09:06 PM by Hailtothechimp
The timing on this to just too coincidental to actually BE coincidental. DeLay steps down from his leadership post on Saturday, and then on Monday we learn that the charges against him in Texas (for money laundering, not Abramoff) are not being thrown out?

Think about the other alternative. Let's say DeLay steps down on Saturday, and then today the charges do get thrown out (after all, isn't that why the House is not in session right now? To buy time for DeLay?). Would DeLay jump back in and say "nevermind, I want my old position back"? Not very likely.

No, I think someone tipped DeLay off (who did it, I will never know) so that he could at least appear to be noble before the hammer fell (a bad pun, I know). It makes it look like he jumped, rather than getting pushed. But it's reasonable to ask if he had some way of knowing the push was coming first. My point is that he wouldn't just jump on his own.

P.S. I posted this on my blog and copied it here. It's at AlohaSpicoli.blogspot.com if anyone is interested.

1. Well I would imagine they told his lawyer before they told the press
No great surprise here. But maybe I don't get what you are getting at.

3. I guess I'm saying DeLay wasn't as noble as he appeared.
When he threw in his cards on Saturday (a strange day to try to make some news), nobody knew he was going to lose on the Texas charges. In hindsight, he looks less noble (if that's possible) because he was going to lose anyway.

I'm saying Saturday's photo-op was a chance for him to save some face. Which maybe he didn't deserve to have.

2. Buggie's been counting votes since Moby Dick was a minnow ......
..... he knew they were ready to deny him the leadership.

He simply didn't have the votes this time.

5. The funny thing is that House leadership delayed the start of new
session almost a month in hopes that DeLay's problems would be cleared up by then and he could come back as leader without a leadership fight. But now they're kind of screwed because, not only didn't the delay (no pun intended) do any good, but the budget process got pushed back so far that they can't overcome some of maneuvers the Dems made at the end of the last session.

But it's really pathetic when Congress works its entire schedule around the legal difficulties of one member.

6. Exactly..
.... the timing is coincidental. The house had already turned against him, and it was becoming apparent on Thurs and Fri that the end was near.
