Anything on Kucinich press article in NM today?
There doesn't seem to be anything about it in this forum.

Couldn't find anything on the Kucinich site.

I'm dying to know how it went.

Any updates?

1. No, nothing
Kucinich lost already...blame who you want (even me, I've been campaigning for Kerry), but...it's over.

According to my grandmother who lives in Cleveland (lib democrat), he was a crappy mayor who almost ruined the city.

So he takes the leftist line with absolutely no nuances in his policy. Ideological liberal. Fine, good...but does that make him an issue candidate (force others to speak to your issues) or a candidate candidate? But as an issue candidate, I hope he does get some coverage.

3. Read Studs Terkel's intro to DK's book
Edited on Sun Feb-01-04 01:53 AM by ZombyWoof
(His book, "A Prayer For America")

No offense to your grandmother, but DK was perceived as a "crappy mayor" because he stood up to the bank and the private power company that tried taking over publicly-owned Muny Light, and wanted to blackmail him into giving up Muny or else the bank would not extend Cleveland any more credit, thus forcing the city into default. The corporate media was alive and well back then, and they universally disparaged DK and ran him out of town on a rail. The bank and that private company shared the same board members, so the conflicts of interest and corruption were right up front.

Nearly 20 years later, he was vindicated as the savior of Muny Light, who still has cheaper power (by 15-20% or so) than the private utility who tried taking them over. He was officially recognized by the city and forgiven.

Not everyone in Cleveland has Muny Light (nor ever did) as their power company, but if your grandmother does, she can thank the former "crappy mayor" for keeping her bills low to this day.

DK paid the price for standing up for public control versus private power. That is the core of why I support him for president, and I don't give a damn who doesn't take him seriously.

2. I was there!
The hall seats 800 and it was standing room only. I sat in 2nd row and was within inches of DK during the Q & A session. Lively, mixed old and young crowd. Albuquerque was loving Dennis.

This was the first time that I had seen Dennis live. He was great.

I want to live in a world in which DK is president. Anyone who can talk quantum physics in one sentence and then quote Yeats' The Second Coming in the next sentence should be listened to by each and every American.

4. Hi WiltedFlowerChild!
Welcome to DU!

:hi: :hi: :hi:

:toast:

*love* your screen name! Wish I'd thought of it, as it sure fits me! :)

I envy you having seen him. I grew up in Los Alamos, my parents moved to Albuquerque quite some time after I graduated, and I can just imagine Albuquerque welcoming Dennis!

I wish the Albuquerque Journal was still accessable online (without a danged fee!), cuz I'd like to see what was written. If you get any more info, pleeeez post!

I, also, want to live in the President Kucinich world!

8. Yikes
Small world. I grew up in Los Alamos TOO!

Dennis doesn't seem to have a memorized speech like the other candidates I have seen in the last 24 hours....I will have seen 4 by Monday.

He spoke and paused and thought and seemed to be just having a good conversation with the crowd.

Thanks for the welcome :)

23. Conversations.... because he isn't just a politician
He's there because he genuinely understands and cares about people. He doing it because he wants to make this country as great as it can be. He isn't in it for power, glory or any other reason. That's what is so unique about him. And, this is being said by someone who has become about as jaded about politics as anyone could be.

I seriously doubt that I'll ever see another person like Dennis Kucinich in my lifetime. There may be other politicians I'll vote for and like, but..... not one who inspires the passion of DK!

27. I also welcome you to DU, WiltedFlowerChild!
And I also love your screen name.:-)

I also envy you having had the opportunity to have seen Dennis in person! I find him inspiring when I merely see him on the small screen! He is quite an amazing speaker, telling the truth and saying what needs to be said. I love his vision for this country. Unfortunately for me, I doubt he'll be coming to New York anytime soon.:-(

How can they say that, when a poster here who was there said there were over 800? Something is.......

It *did*, however, mention his criticism of the whole WMD lie.

Thanks for the link.... I hadn't even tried the Journal, as it went fee quite some time ago.

I'll hope for more coverage... guess I'll look at the Sante Fe New Mexican.

Thanks for posting!

10. wow- check out these *subtle* put downs....
"a beaming John Edwards begged an enthusiastic crowd"

"Dennis Kucinich, somber and angry...told his huddle of supporters..."

"Wesley Clark whipped up a crowd of about 300..."

"Edwards New Mexico flavored rally was in the Indian Room...a mairachi band led him inside..."

"Several miles away...Kucinich held a news conference. Surrounded by about 40 supporters...."

"Clark with three WWII veterans on the stage behind him...."

The article also mentioned how Kucinich supports much of the Green Part platform...then at the end they have the header in bold "Considering Clark" and how a VN vet belives Clark has the credentials.

Nope...certainly no bias in this report, is there?

:grr:

11. I saw Edwards today also
He had a good crowd, but I really thought that the 3 questions that he took were plants.

Not near the amount of electricity as for DK tonight who took questions for over an hour on Iraq, WMD's, health care, and even the "selection" of Bush.

15. The Bush question
The guy that asked Dennis the question about the 2000 election rambled on for quite awhile about the state that today's voters find themselves in. Voting for the lesser of two evils and feeling that they have no real choice.

Dennis simply answered "Yes, I agree" though he did not seem to be avoiding the question, he left it at that.

Thanks for putting those quotes together like that. It sure paints the picture!

Y'know, Dennis is one big guy to keep dealing with that ad nauseum, and not blowing his stack. I don't think I"d handle it as well. He has his eyes on the prize, and doesn't get side-tracked with the garbage.

Whatta guy!

16. Another article
"During a news conference Saturday, Kucinich called on all American to seek the truth behind the circumstances that
led the country to war against Iraq. "This a moment when our morality as a nation is on the line," he said. "It's really a question of who we are."

This is from another article, same paper:
http://www.abqjournal.com/elex/apedw01-31-04.htm

" Kucinich also said, as president, he would do away with the nation's nuclear weapons arsenal and shut down any
government laboratories specializing in weapons design. That message is of particular interest to New Mexico, home
to Los Alamos and Sandia national laboratories. As for the labs' scientists and employees, he said their "technological
genius" would be used elsewhere within the government for more peaceful pursuits. "

If anything can be said against Dennis, he certainly can't be accused of pandering to "special interests"! That took guts to say that in New Mexico!

You go, Dennis!

32. No Dennis won't pander
In the S. Carolina debate , he made a point of stating that he was staying in NC due to the Confederate Flag issue. Took guts to say that, too, unlike certain other native son types who crassly tailored their message to the rather blunt locals.

21. Hi Kanary
Graduated '71...LA High. My grandmother's house burnt down in Cerro Grande. My parents house survived. 35th Street...out by the Golf Course.

I don't get to Los Alamos much anymore. Parents have moved away.

I've never left NM. Have lived in Taos, Santa Fe and now Albuquerque.

I hope that is all resolved OK by now.

I was there two weeks before Cerro Grande, visiting my old neighborhood.

Went back that October, and was so dismayed by the damage.

Must have been exciting to live in Taos! I really miss northern New Mexico, especially the dances at the Pueblos.

Kanary, still envious that you saw DK!

28. Here's a mention on the rally with Scott Ritter
http://tinyurl.com/2e9te

Extracts:

The 2004 campaign for the White House came to Santa Fe in a big way Friday with the wife of Sen. John Kerry appearing in the city, a prominent war critic stumping for Rep. Dennis Kucinich at the Capitol and one actual candidate, retired Gen. Wesley Clark, drawing hundreds of supporters to a downtown rally.

---
The next candidate to hit town will be Kucinich, who is scheduled to speak at La Fonda at 12:30 p.m. Sunday and then at a peace rally on the Plaza at 1 p.m.

A Kucinich rally was held at the Capitol on Friday and featured former United Nations weapons inspector Scott Ritter, an early critic of the war in Iraq.

Ritter, a former U.S. Marine, was a weapons inspector in Iraq from 1991 to 1998. He has been a vocal critical of the Bush administration's policy on Iraq.

Ritter said he is a registered Republican who voted for Bush in 2000, but he won't this year "because I feel so strongly about holding him accountable for what he's done in our name."

Ritter called Iraq "the defining issue of our time" and said ucinich is the only Democratic candidate with a plan to get the United States out of Iraq.

Kucinich might not end up the party's nominee, Ritter acknowledged. But his proposal for a Department of Peace to ensure the United States doesn't head down a path of destruction is "something that every single Democratic candidate must embrace if we are to survive as a nation."

This is one of my favorite themes. I mention it whenever I bother to answer one of those What-would-it-take-to-get-you-to-support-X queries such as come up daily on DU.

Whoever you support to become the Democratic nominee, I hope you will urge him to adopt Dennis's DoP proposal.
