The big divide is whether he would choose someone who could succeed him or just pull a Dan Quayle like his dad did in '88 and pick someone with no chance of moving up.

First, its a big if. I've got $25 for DU that says Cheney doesn't retire.

But assuming I'm wrong, anyone named by chimpy to replace him has to be confirmed by a majority in the House and Senate. Both of those bodies, in all likelihood, will be more closely divided between repubs and Democrats (indeed, in a perfect world, one or both will have Democratic majorities). There are several repub and Democratic senators with presidential ambitions (Frist, Allen, McCain, Hagel, Kerry(?), Bayh). As a result, there will be considerable pressure on chimpy (particularly if he is still has a below 40 percent approval rating) to pick someone who disavows any intention of running for president.
