Letter from publisher of Lone Star Iconoclast - They need our help!
Edited on Wed Mar-01-06 03:59 PM by Amaryllis
Just got this email from W. Leon Smith, publisher of the Lone Star Iconoclast. This is the paper in Bush's home town. They have taked courageous stands on many issues, including endorsing Kerry, and have taken a huge amount of flak.

Thank You, from the bottom of the birdcage.

The Lone Star Iconoclast staff wants to thank everyone who sent us words of encouragement during the days following publication of our endorsement editorial in 2004. The neo-cons came after us, fully loaded, and you helped us feel as though we weren’t alone in the quest to bring truth to public discourse. Unfortunately, the editorial was prophetic in that many of the issues upon which we touched have evolved into a nightmare for our nation.

We also want to introduce you to a book that our staff has written called “The Vigil — 26 Days In Crawford, Texas.”

The Iconoclast reported thoroughly on Cindy Sheehan’s August 2005 visit to Central Texas. We have compiled details of this coverage, including play-by-plays, exclusive interviews, editorials, and our reporters’ impressions of the history-making events into the 192-page book, published by The Disinformation Company, New York.

One reason we wrote “The Vigil” is because it is a textbook example of how a peaceful revolution can be started, from a detailed eyewitness point of view. The nuances, dangers, surprises, and strategies are revealed, as is the heartbreak that attaches itself to universal emotions on all sides of the issue of war.

What could have been another Kent State was capably handled by Texas peace officers, even when emotions reached their boiling point in the hot Texas sun. In Crawford, Sheehan gave birth to the first viable anti-war movement of the 21st century and jolted the mainstream media into again asking some tough questions.

“The Vigil” provides an interesting look at history in the making, as it happened.

The book sells for $9.95 per copy. It is available from Amazon and is in many bookstores. We ask that you consider buying copies for yourself, friends, and as a donation to your community library. This will help us immensely in defraying some of the costs of publishing the Iconoclast, which is still being boycotted in and around Crawford. Please feel free to forward this message to others whom you feel might be interested in the book.

The link to our book on the Amazon.com website (where you can also leave a review, if you wish) is: http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1932857338/qid=1138045617/sr=8-1/ref=pd_bbs_1/103-8082297-0099010?n=507846&s=books&v=glance

As for the newspaper, The Iconoclast continues to carry stories that might be hard to find elsewhere — not to mention hard-hitting editorials and commentary. Please visit us frequently at www.lonestaricon.com.

Here’s thanking you in advance for any help you can provide.

Respectfully,

W. Leon Smith

1. I wonder how much DU helped them stay in business?
I remember they were considering folding and people here ordered subscriptions.

That's America, damnit!

3. It just goes to show you
that not even in Crawford is everyone bad. I brought home several copies of the Iconoclast and sent some money. They held fast in hostile territory.

I am going to order the book right now, thanks for posting this.

6. Please consider going to Amazon via the link on DU Home Page
on the right side of the page, about a quarter of the way down. Or via Amazon links on some of your favorite blogs. This way, the book costs you the same but the host site you order from will get a small commission.

10. Thanks for that tip, havocmom. Question:
I just went through the Amazon link and not through a link to any specific book. Does DU only get a percentage of links for a specific book, or do they also get a percentage of any order placed through that Amazon link?

11. I believe it is for all purchases via that link
But you could email Skinner and get a for-sure answer. It would be a nice thread when you find out for sure ;) We need to remind each other about these things from time to time.

Support liberal blogs and boards when ever and how ever. They are the only media we can count as real reasources!

7. K & R big time. For the occasion, the perfect Oliphant ****CARTOON****:
published when it was all happening in Crawford, it captures it perfectly. You'll note DUer Hissyspit still uses one of the panels from this gem as a sig line image.

12. I 'wore' a quote from the Lone Star Iconoclast
in my sig line for a long time after the election. I thought it was beautiful:

"The time is now to draw a line in the sand -- to give not one inch, one millimeter, one vote toward the cause of skewing this election." - W. Leon Smith and Don M. Fisher, Editors, The Lone Star Iconoclast

The book sounds wonderful, and LSI certainly deserves our support.

20. K & R. I recommend the book highly, especially for those that
were there. It is exceptional account of the month from the reporters' perspective.

Leon and staff certainly do deserve DU love.
