House minority leader won't seek re-election in November

March 1, 2006, 2:53 PM EST

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) _ The longtime Republican leader of the state House of Representatives announced Wednesday he won't seek re-election in November.

Robert M. Ward, R-North Branford, said it's time for him to retire from the legislature. The 53-year-old father of four was first elected to the 86th Assembly District seat in 1984, representing North Branford, East Haven, Wallingford and Guilford.

He has served as the House minority leader for the past 12 years, making him the longest-serving legislative leader in Connecticut history.

"I have loved the challenges of leading this amazing caucus, but there comes a time to look for new challenges," Ward said. "For me, that time has come."

1. That is pretty young to be retiring...
There was a thread with an article somewhere talking about mass retirements among the Republicans...

2. I doubt if there is a scandal.
I know Ward and his family - they are squeaky clean people.

More likely, he is considering a run for Congress !
