Different Leaders Get Different Receptions in India

In January, The Democratic Daily followed the news as John Kerry made his way through India, Pakistan and the Middle East on a twelve day trip. It’s interesting to note the mass protests in India today in the wake of Bush’s first visit to the world’s largest democracy.



There were no protests when John Kerry visited India. There were no signs saying “Kerry go back.”

Kerry probably didn't get much reception at all ... good or bad. I could be wrong, though.

11. Actually, Kerry received a lot of PR on his trip. Our media ignored it.

Many of the stories were covered by the AFP. Kerry met with the same people Bush is meeting with too. Many of the same issues were discussed and a dinner or two was held in his honor.

17. The Indian press gave him a big buildup before he got there - he's a hero

there because of his work on BCCI. At least THEY recognize the significance of shutting down the terrorist bank, since Pakistani and Arab terror networks also targeted India.

there was a picture of Kerry talking to a little boy who had a drawn picture of him as a Vietnam soldier and asked Kerry to sign it. I thought that was so cute. I have it somewhere on my data discs. Does anybody have it?

from BCCI. He has a decent reputation over there, and was featured in a few news stories as he made his way.

A private citizen wouldn't have made the news. But still, you have a point. Apple= Senator. Orange= President.

7. The visit got alot of coverage there

Lots of positive articles in their media. Then again, he actually cared about the people in the region. Peculiar that he made a trip to the region, including Afghanistan, before our official pResident did.

Not as a private citizen.

As noted by Sandnsea below he received a lot of media coverage on the trip and there were two live interviews on CNN during the trip as well.

if you look at those pictures, that's a LOT of people. Too bad * won't ever see them.

I wonder what it will take for the U.S. to begin to look like that.

Notice the difference in the mood by everyone including their soldiers protecting Kerry. He is allowed to mingle with the crowds and relax. You can't see any tension in their bodies.

Republican Congressmen have gone to Southeast Asia as well (including George Allen, among others) and have not been greeted by protests.

The issue here, more likely, is that Bush is visible while no one in India cares about U.S. Senators.
