NOLA-700,000 displaced Louisiana voters will soon get information packets

Far-flung La. voters to receive mailings

They'll explain how, when to cast ballots

Capital bureau
BATON ROUGE -- More than 700,000 displaced Louisiana voters will soon get information packets on how they can participate in local, state and federal elections this year. But a radio and television education campaign informing them of their voting rights has not gotten off the ground, officials said Thursday.

Jennifer Marusak, assistant to Secretary of State Al Ater, said the first direct mailings left the printers Wednesday and should be in the hands of displaced residents by the end of next week. . . . ..

Marusak said the state hoped to have the radio and television commercials produced and . . . . broadcast commercials have been delayed because the office has had trouble finding an entertainment figure to act as spokesperson and a studio to tape the commercials. Free said she thinks that problem was solved Thursday when "a star" agreed to do the commercials free. . . . .

"We have had to beef up our voter information hotline" to accommodate the calls, she said.

2. The republicans are doing everything they can to stop cajuns from
voting. It's so totally apparent that the refugees are NOT going to support republican candidates.

And, hmmm....I wonder who the STAR is going to be on the commercials. I hope the mainstream media has the decency to help out on this one. However, I won't hold my breath.

4. the mail system is so messed up down there
I have a friend who (now) lives well north of the city. He had to move several times before finding longer-term housing (the family lost three homes with Katrina). He said the mail is still very unreliable, very messed up.

He's filed all the paperwork with the post office on his location, yet he has a hard time getting things that are addressed directly to his new temporary home. I can't imagine how difficult it is to get mail to people who haven't found long-term housing, who have moved more than a few times, etc.

I hope they're able to find a way to get information to these people so they can vote. All I know is that there are likely a whole lot fewer Republican supporters. From what my friend has said, some people are very apathetic about government, and may not vote at all because they feel it's pointless. Others may be highly motivated to vote out anyone currently holding any political office.

8. Yes, but that could backfire
Since there's no "welfare queens" to vote against, and since these folks need so much help, they might actually step out of their stereotype-based voting habits and vote their own interests. We could see some interesting changes out of this, I hope.
