I just asked one of my wingnut sisters
if she still supported Bush. She said yes. Then I bursted out laughing and she said that she had to go and hung up. I'm going to see both of my wingnut sisters tomorrow. I'm really going to really give them hell.

4. anyone who's still a bushie by now won't respond to logic
they'll hear it only as hatred of their beloved leader.

laughing at THEM is something they will respond to it makes THEM feel like a fool for supporting shrub.

25. Yeah, logic doesn't penetrate their er...sphere.
The support was never based on anything logical to begin with.

12. Maybe give them a copy of the Constitution...
Hmmmm... that brings to mind an idea... as a group, we Democrats need to put together a pamphlet entitled "The Constitution for Dummies" (or perhaps not titled that way, but with content on that level) which explains the basics of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. It might also include a little background, history and select quotes from the founding fathers...

I keep forgetting we're dealing with Republicans... perhaps we could produce something like that made from cartoons or with lots of pictures... something, anything to bring it down to their level or make it accessible to them (or interesting enough to hold their attention for a few minutes).

All this I base on the assumption that most Republicans don't have the slightest clue what's in the Constitution. They have no idea even what's in the Bill of Rights portion... so they don't even know when the government has infringed on our (sacred) rights. Reality is probably even worse, though, for unless they are given to understand the reasons behind many of the elements of our Constitution, government and rights... just knowing what they are won't be good enough to convince them we need them and need to protect them.

There is alot of truth to the notion that the difference between the average Republican and the corresponding Democrat is Education. (Obviously, when referring to Republican "Leaders", they aren't necessarily ignorant/uneducated but rather they are deliberately taking advantage of the ignorance of the large segment of the general population that calls itself Republican). Anything we can do to convince regular Republicans to take an interest in our founding documents and the underlying reasoning would be to our advantage... though it might not work to just tell them they just don't get it and need to do a little studying (naturally, insulting people doesn't always get them to do what you want them to do). The funny thing is, one of the biggest causes of ignorance in our society--could be used most effectively to educate instead; that is television. Alas, it too is vastly controlled by Republicans/Corporations--neither of which are interested in using the medium to educate anyone.

17. Great post, Neo. I have been suggesting a Bill of Rights Party or at least
suggesting it be made a core stand of the Democratic Party. Some of our DU'rs might have problems with the right to bare arms but it goes with our individual right to self protection. It is necessary even though in a civilized society it seems reckless.

We can see how fast basic rights can be rationalized away in fear, war or antiquity. We can see how slyly individual rights can be dismissed and how soon even womens' bodies won't be their own.How easy it has been for big money too purchase our rights to privacy, and free speech. Our armed forces right to liberty has been denied with stop loss.

Freedom must be maintained through, our power as a people who remember. We must remember the civil rights workers from the Underground Railroad to the Molly McGuire's to Act Up and many many more. It's a constant fight to check greed and lordship. Each and every citizen equal under the Law. The law of the CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA.

13. In that event, verbally eviscerate them
No mercy for Nazis...even kinder and gentler ones (for under the right circumstances and with just the tiniest authority and approval from The Leader, they could become that).

Sorry about your sisters. I couldn't be more saddened for you if you told me they had brain cancer (when in a way, they do).

3. YES!!!!! humiliate them
that's the ONLY thing that will shake them out of it. the only reason anyone can still be a bushie is peer pressure and the desire for inclusion and so on. they're obviously well-trained to ignore logic or else they wouldn't be bushies.

laughing at them is the only way. it makes being a bushie NOT the "right", "safe", "in" thing to do.

5. You can pretty much answer anything with "President Hillary will like that
Wiretaps = "President Hillary will like that"

Patriot Act = "President Hillary will like that"

18. That's the conclusion I reached about my own wingnut relatives.
Love 'em, but can't figure out what went wrong with them politically. Actually, I do know ... it was their conservative religious leaders that took them down that path. The road to Hell is paved with Republicans.

21. Why?
I usually stick to the news here but really, why mess up family over politics.

Politics will be politics for the next 50 years. In 2006 there will be elections in 08 elections. Same shit different people and party. I never got the rabid clinton haters and don't get rabid bush hating. American politics are pretty standard. People hated Kennedy, people hated Reagan, nothing new here.

Intellectual discussion fine, just pissing family off, why? I enjoy political discussion with family but it can be civilized.

Why any crooked, and they are all crooked as shit (both isles), politician should screw up my family time is beyond me.

My 2 cents.

22. Well, if they don't have a response, that's a start!
I suspect there a huge swath of the GOP voting population with a sinking feeling in their gut...they've been had...and they're trying to come to grips with it.

I say go slow with them...bring them around with logic and common sense.

Find a cheap copy of 1984, and cross out 1984 and put 2006 and give it to them.

27. I was talking to my boss today, and asked if he still supported voting
for Shrub. Honest to god, he told me, "Well, it was better than the alternative". The man is not a fundie at all, but he sure has been taken in by the spin on the news. I wasn't about to get into a discussion with him, some things are better left unsaid with your boss. So I just walked away shaking my head in disbelief.
