Potentially dumb question about New Orleans

If there are many unemployed people in New Orleans, and there is much work that needs to be done to fix it up... why can't people who needs jobs be working to fix up NO? Something like Habitat for Humanity but with local residents getting paid to do the work?

Not to mention that there are still many local residents who are still stuck in other cities.

It would be logical to get people home just to do that. But then, I think we all know how far logic carries one in this society. :eyes:

2. Well here is why...

Red Tape: the stuff that keeps our government from working.
Bureaucrat: person who loves red tape.
Red Tape + Bureaucrat = nothing gets done.

You should know better than to ask a common sense question of our government.

Government can be the most powerful tool for the betterment of humanity, but when it is so dysfunctional it can actually cost lives. We have unfortunately seen this recently, and it is getting worse. We should simplify the government, cut down on administrative costs, so we can provide more services to the people. Unfortunately, most people in America don't care about anything farther than the end of their nose. I feel like the wicked witch in the wizard of oz; "You'll get yours, you selfish sons of (you know what!)" With H5N1 just around the corner the problems of government that were shown in Katrina could be multiplied by millions. People had better wise-up or their goose will be cooked.

3. ok, think about it this way;

I don't kow where you heard that there are 'many unemployed people' in New Orleans
but it goes like this:

there actually ARE many jobs available; many employers who cannot find workers
mostly service industry - hotels, restaurants etc.

case in point:
one of our sons was wiped out by Katrina in New Orleans
he's a 20-something, and was renting
he lost everything, moved to Florida, worked for Disney
now he's back (Baton Rouge this time)

he worked for the Maison Dupuy
a way-fancy hotel in the French Quarter
they want him back
fabulous
but there is no place to live
he would have to commute from Baton Rouge to New Orleans
they call him constantly
it would be a great job
but it's a hard decision

there is NO PLACE to live in New Orleans
this is THE problem

jobs yes, housing no.
