Brace yourself, Idaho. If Sen. John Kerry wins the presidency, nobody will forget we´re the Spud State but we´ll add “Western White House” to our trademark. The new Democratic front-runner, through his wife, Teresa Heinz Kerry, has strong ties to Idaho. For the month of August and the Christmas break, they retreat to the Ketchum home owned by the ketchup heiress since 1988.

Last winter, Idaho House Minority Leader Wendy Jaquet rode a Sun Valley lift with the snowboarding Kerry, asking him to keynote the Frank Church Banquet. Kerry gave the speech in March.
“It´s cool, very cool,” said Jaquet, D-Ketchum, who met Heinz Kerry a decade ago when she gave $325,000 to save Galena Lodge from demolition.
“We have a beautiful, beautiful state,” Jaquet said. “It would elevate Idaho in the minds of a lot of people.”
For the first time since LBJ won Idaho in 1964, Democrats may have a nominee who won´t cripple efforts to gain seats in the Legislature. “This is a candidate who can actually help,” Jaquet said.
