The media has reported on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS that the cries from India and Pakistan are for "Death To America." Do you have an internet connection? Can you READ? They are not talking about George W. Bush. Do you know who they are talking about?

We're probably the most contradictary of citizens--who struggle to become a rugged individual while relying on other's affirmations; who have the power to help so many people raise awareness, eradicate diseases and poverty, but are so self consumed we cannot think globally. I guess it's that age old question about Americans--our good intentions but our inability to recognize other perspectives. And I don't necessarily believe all Americans are like this way, or that all nations view every single American as evil. But I suppose when you have an administration representing the entire nation, including its people, it's a bit difficult to paint a rosier picture. Knowing of these contradictions? I read alot--a lot of perspectives, a lot that reflect my own preference. I just want to see the good in people and hope to god that we can get back on the right track...

4. No good reason for it.

The worlds poor all of a sudden cry 'death to America' for no good reason. The reasoning here is that
as a race the other worlders just can't think straight. We are just about as good as people can be and
those other people are genetically inferior and therefore hate us.
We have done nothing wrong.
We have never been a tool of their oppression.
We have never supported fascist governments and been integral to the formation of death squads.
We have never committed the most heinous of human rights crimes all to support our holy overseas corporations.
We have always demanded that our overseas companies never operate slave shops. In fact our Dept of State
inspects our international corporations to be sure they are not simply raping the human and material resources of third
world countries while simply paying bribes to the rich families that rule.
"The Ugly American" is a fantasy book but Barnes and Noble mistakenly keeps it in it's business section.
This country really really cares about the poor and would never kill just to reinforce our self image as
Gods Chosen Consumers.

People in Iraq are dead and dying by the thousands at the hands of our military and they haven't done a god damned thing to us.
I am not the pillager. My government is the pillager. My government uses my tax dollars, my silence my thirst for cheap energy to
do these things.
We are complicit. I am complicit. But I sure as hell don't delude myself into thinking the other guy is somehow irrationally evil and so
worthy of our phosphorus bombs and our shock and awe.
We are a bad ass nation and have been screwing the little guy for most of our history.
You may have a heart of gold. Our corporations, our money men and their military do not.

12. #4 is on target, and no, I don't hate my Country or fellow citizens...

... nor do I condone violence or calls to violence. But it is well to understand where it comes from, if we should ever hope for a more peaceful world. Yes, we have been agents of oppression, torture, and exploitation. I think that many victims of such - or at least their leaders - are far more aware of our role than is the ordinary US citizen, most of whom - historically, not just now - seem to accept their Government's self-definition as an agent of peace, Democracy, and human rights.

I doubt the OP is so naive, and I empathize with his/her anger - I don't wish to see any of my loved ones or fellow citizens die for the crimes of the CIA and US corporations. But I think the level of naivete in the US about the actions of our Government is hardly credible to much of the world. After all, we are the highly educated citizens of a Democracy. We vote those responsible for our foreign policy, responsible for the death we deal so casually to others, into office again and again.
