Can Someone help me understand some of the finer points of this article
I'm wondering what the US really got in return for the "uninteruppted supply of nuclear fuel? Whats the deal with Pakistan not getting the same deal?

India ensured uninterrupted nuclear fuel supply

* US to help create reserve nuclear fuel for the lifetime of Indian reactors
* India will not sign model NPT agreement

......snip

Sources said on Saturday that India negotiated these two conditions in return for separating its civilian and military nuclear reactors in the deal with the US.

......snip

(This is political jargon to me?)

Sources said that India wants its “de facto nuclear status to be as close as possible to a de jure status” and to distinguish it from the non-nuclear weapon states.

................Snip

(Why?)

Sources refused to identify the 14 nuclear plants that India has agreed to put under IAEA safeguards but indicated that Tarapur IV, India’s largest atomic power plant, is excluded from the list.

1. Basically, India is saying that they are going to keep doing...
what they are doing at present, only now with official blessing of U S (and probably UN).

"de facto" (what is fact, or actual) becomes "de jure" (by law, actual).

Pretty much claims "what is, by practice" will be "what will be, under law".

India also states that they will abide by IAEA guidelines except where it really matters (Terapur IV).

The separation of civilian and military..... is just so much air.

At least we will be able to enjoy those fine Indian mangoes.

3. No wonder they refused to release the details...
This is all crap except for the part where the Indians pretty much said they would (and believe me, they can) use Terapur IV for anything they please with no oversight. Terapur is one of the largest, most advanced nuclear plants in the world.

This should prove a major embarrassment to the State Dept.

Remember, Rice was along and HAD to sign off on that claptap.

The Indians must be laughing their collective ass off.

4. Every time I hear about this deal
I can't help but think of the story of Jack and the beanstalk. Bush sold an uninteruppted supply of nuclear fuel for mangoes and I can only pray they are magical mangoes but i am afraid they are not.

5. Not just fuel...
by exempting Tarafur IV, we will be building quite a few Generation IV power plants for India that will fall under this same exemption.
