Anyone else notice Bill Maher's speechlessness (DL Hughley)...
Did anyone else catch how DL Hughley made Bill Maher go speechless on his HBO show on Friday? That was a first for me.

For those who didn't see it - Maher started a segment out by saying that he thought Bush is a deep Christian and Hughley interrupted him and said that if one more MoFO called Bush a Christian he was going to explode.

Maher was stunned while Hughley explained rightfully why Bush is no Christian. Maher and the rest of the panel was speechless and you could see one of those "uncomfortable silences" set in.

Hughley is an excellent guest.

1. he's right, too!
Bush is as much a Christian as he is a rancher, or a pilot, or a reader, or a fucking president for that matter

7. Yes, Bill was stunned
You know, Bill, Dana Priest and that other jerk once again ganged up on the Democrats having no voice and not doing anything. I wish Maher would get it. They are in the minority in both Senate and House, Bush has his Bully pulpit AND Corporate owned MSM doesn't ever give the Dems much of an opportunity and when they do appear, the host will try to sabotage them, ala Pumpkin Head Russert.

Bush created all this mess but the Democrats are supposed to handily clean things up with no power right now. Easy for Bill to say.

Yep, Bush is no Christian. Hughley is right on the money.

21. Check out some of Graydon Carter's writing...
Over the past couple of years Craydon Carter has done some of the best essay writing on Bush, Iraq and politics in his editor's column in Vanity Fair. Some letter writers have complained, but he has really written some really good stuff.

9. I'll tell you the part I was glad someone said publicly.........
When Graydon Carter was talking about the way Bush explains things in his speeches as if he's talking to a child. Carter said that Bush does that because that's how things have been explained to him!

I've believed that for a long time! It was nice to hear someone else say it too.........

It's like that Bushism where he was trying to explain what a sovereign nation is. He said something like 'a sovereign nation is a nation that's sovereign'. Except he went into a long explanation and he used the word 'sovereign' about 5 or 6 times!! And he never did actually explain it. I got the impression that HE didn't even know what it meant!! If he did know what it meant, he could have used a different word to describe it!

29. Bingo
Bush explains things as if he were talking to a child or a moron because this is how it is explained to him.

He cannot deviate from explaining stuff in the manner it was explained to him because he knows nothing else about it. It drives me crazy!

5. you're right........Hughley is a great guest!
He always seems to have a great show when DL is on!!

And I agreed with him about Bush's 'faith'. I think Bush uses religion for political purposes..........the reality, of course is........Bush is not faithful at all! If his faith were really important to him, he would practice it every day and evidence of his faith would show in his policies. I've seen no such evidence according to things he does.

But to be fair, I also understand what Maher was trying to say too. He was simply saying that Bush sees himself as a kind of messiah. He wasn't really saying that he (Bill) agrees with that, just that it's the way Bush sees himself.

And yes, he was taken aback for a moment...........

27. Why does everyone think
he is a Christian? Just because he mouthes the words? In the "Christian" section of the bookstore, I passed a huge coffee book honoring George W. Bush. Ugh. I think Bush is popular among those Christians who also simply mouth the right words instead of actually practicing their faith. His shallowness appeals to their shallowness. (sorry if I offend anyone here).

He might hit a home run now and then, but the truth is, he doesn't really "get it" about the deadly tightly woven web this country finds itself caught in.

14. Another ridiculous Maher moment was when
Graydon Carter responded that there was a Dem who was speaking out on the issues, namely Gore. This gave Maher another chance to repeat his uninformed views about how Gore has done nothing on the environment. He can't admit his idiocy in 2000 in backing the lying, demagogic Nader.

Then Dana Priest jumped in with more MSM spin claiming Gore didn't do anything on the environment as VP either. My wife and I looked at each other and said, "Kyoto? helloooooooo?"

Maher rehearsed his theme that Gore didn't talk about climate change in 2000. Totally false. Gore mentioned it early and often, but the MSM refused to cover it.

Maher is one of the biggest ass-clowns on TV. As Ross would say: "World class."

He's got a checkered personal past as well.. It's hard to imagine him being good company when you hear him talk off the cuff or in Playboy style interviews. Creep is always the word that comes up.

13. Hughley exploded a myth
and it's something that needs to be done a lot more. Love Bill, but I just knew he was going to go on one of his anti religion rants & Hughley stopped him in his tracts. It's so unfair to characterize all Christians as being republican or following the word of Christ. These rt wingers have their own "republican version" of what being a Christian is.. and it's no where near the truth. WTG Hughley, thanks for pointing it out.

Just called it all for what it was, and I liked the other guy on the panel ... The bimbo in the middle was kind of an excuser, but couldn't get a word in edgewise ...

It is ABOUT DARN TIME people started to noted the WIDE disconnect between Bushco's substance abuse recovery driven obsession with religion and his actions ...

23. DL needs to know that the House and Senate make up Congress
I think he thinks Congress is just the name
for the House.

Refreshing show in that there weren't any
conservatives and DL did add some needed humor
left out of previous two shows.

Dana bashed Hillary a bit too much I thought.
Maybe her ire should be directed at the Bushies
who are trying to bring journalists in front
of their gestapo.

25. I don't think Bill knows enough about religion to make distinctions
I love his show. He is a very secular kind of guy, who really despises religion deep down. He's not exactly secretive about it, either.

But people who don't have any backround with religion often don't understand the various kinds of christians out there. They tend to lump all christians under one label, and don't accept that there are liberal christians out there, too.

I have a fundie coworker who doesn't think that I am a christian because I don't believe there is such a thing as hell. I also don't think the whole trinity concept is all that important. I do think that the Sermon on the Mountain is the most important teaching in the New Testament and try to live by that standard in my life. I don't necessarily accept the whole born again in an instant thinking, either.

I'm more into spirituality than religion, however.

31. that was FANTASTIC but for those who watched this can i ask a question
what did you think of dl and his reaction that followed the bush/Christianity outburst (which was a beautiful moment)

if you recall soon after this shining moment graydon carter (editor of vanity fair) made comments to the effect that movies like brokeback mountain represent an unreachable/unaccepted love
his point was that it wasnt a new story and compared it to sidney poitiers movies of the 60s
those in which sidney loved a white woman and society wouldnt allow the interacial romance or made it very hard

and it seemed to me that dl wanted very much to unleash a few pointed comments to graydon
he did say a little something and seemed he wanted to say more but held back - he almost seemed so full of strong feeling he couldnt say much

a very complicated issue and i really (to the extent i can of course) do understand african americans anger
and can understand they want nothing to do with any comparison to the struggle of the homosexual community
i guess because i adored his righteous anger about bush and his "Christianity" it surprised me that it took such a sudden turn

but i applaud dl to be sure - he has passion and is clearly well informed and intelligent
his appearance made me respect him all the more but i am left wondering about where he stands on this
i just wasnt sure if he was coming from a form of homophobia in his response or if he was coming from a very deep understandable anger at ANY struggle compared to what he and african americans have suffered because of their skin color

i want equality and love for all peoples no matter what category they fit in so this struck a chord
also in case this makes any difference i have been in a same sex partnership for 11 years and am just trying to understand what various people think about this complicated comparison

i would love to understand more of this and hear what anyone else thought about this
where was dl coming from do you think

Hughley was excellent. The only point that upset me was how Maher kept talking about how the Democrats don't get mad and fire back!

But He IS correct here... He used Hillary as an example and I feel he was trying to give her "the nudge" but I'm not sure she will pick up on it, nor many of the other Dems!

37. I would say our passion is not as easily seen as the Rethugs.....
Really though, let's contrast what we think the Rethugs would be doing if the two parties were reversed - I can only imagine the firestorm that we would have seen by not capturing OBL yet and the reaction if a Democrat president had signed off on the port deal. Certainly the port deal is much more complex than the media describes it, but imagine the mileage republicans would have gotten from that if a Dem had been in office.

In my own assessment, I believe liberals and conservatives are very different and process information and ideas different. Sadly, right now, the methods of communication - mainly television - favors rethuglicans and their ideas (sound bites, short bursts of information, imagery, et cetera).
