CNN just reported this on Inside Politics.

This is excellent news for the Kucinich campaign!

6. Can somebody explain
what "qualifying for federal matching funds" means? What does it take to qualify for that?
Thanks

7. What are Matching Funds?
What are Matching Funds?

The Kucinich campaign is working within the public financing system and is not accepting corporate money.

Under the public financing system, any funds contributed by an individual, up to a total of $250, will be matched with federal dollars. Individuals can contribute up to $2,000 per election cycle, but only the first $250 will be matched.

The first opportunity for the campaign to obtain matching funds is in January, and the funds matched will be those reported by December 1. In order for us to process these contributions and report them, we need to receive them by November 28.

If you have not yet contributed $250 we encourage you to do so now, before November 28, to help boost the campaign to the next level.

Contributions up to $250 received after November 28 will still be eligible for federal matching funds, but those funds will not be made available as quickly.

Please contribute now when it matters most.

10. Kerry and Bush opted out!
That's the crux of the matter! Bush can happily raise over $200M in his war chest, while the Democratic nominee has a third of that amount because of the constraints of campaign finance laws.

The biggest problem is that our nominee will not get any matching funds until the Fall, leaving him/her at a great disadvantage while Bush can run commercials (and buy air time) in critical states long before Labor Day.

I don't know what it is but you do have to make a certain minimum to prove you can raise money on your own.

11. That's great news - congrats.
As anyone who has slavishly followed my posts (quit stalking me, all of you!) I am not a Kucinich fan, but I'm sincerely glad for you (and him)and think that news like this, for any Dem, is positive and great. I happen to like the competition between our candidates, with the thought that whoever emerges will be stronger against Bush because of it.

What a great Christmas present for all of you.

36. This is great news, not just for Kucinich supporters, but also for...
all of us that believe that the corporate media should not dictate to us who we are going to see on TV, and who to vote for.

Shove that up your ass, Ted Koppel, and up your "vanity" TV Show. And a big BOOO to ABC News!

15. Matching Funds for Dennis Kucinich
The longer Congressman Kucinich is in the race, the better the chance that progressive ideas will be heard, no thanks to ABC News.

I talked to a Kucinich supporter and his teenaged son in San Francisco in November. They realized that their candidate faced a steep climb but it lifted me to see the inspiration in their faces and hear it in their voices. Dennis Kucinich really resonates with his supporters. Hats off to 'em, and congrats to Dennis on the matching funds.

is it better to make 4 donations of $250 rather than one donation of $1000? or is the matching funds based on contributors' totals, not individual donations?

34. Hi, GBD4...
Don't think we met before. :toast: Here's to ya.

From my limited knowledge: Candidate must collect $100,000, $5000 from each of 20 states in $250 contributions or less, to qualify for matching funds.(The states that helped him qualify were listed somewhere on the board, or it was from a link.)

As to YOUR contribution to Dennis, should you decide to go for it, I would contribute 4 times @ $250, with 4 separate checks or 4 separate credit card transactions. But I really don't know if only the first $250 counts for 1:1 federal match, or each one counts.HALP!! EXPERTS NEEDED!!

THE GOAL:$1.5 million BY MIDNIGHT. You still have time tonight.

WE HAVE A REAL WINNER IN DK!!

35. Update: FEC says Kucinich to get $18.6 million
Edited on Thu Dec-25-03 12:04 AM by IndianaGreen
FEC Says Kucinich Qualifies for Funding
Wed Dec 24, 8:16 PM ET

WASHINGTON - The Federal Election Commission has declared Rep. Dennis Kucinich qualified to receive federal matching funds, making the Ohio congressman eligible for up to $18.6 million, the FEC said Wednesday.

Candidates must meet FEC requirements to qualify, including raising a threshold amount of $100,000 by collecting $5,000 in 20 different states in amounts no greater than $250 from any individual. They also must agree to an overall spending limit, abide by spending limits in each state, use public funds only for legitimate campaign-related expenses, keep financial records, and permit an extensive campaign audit.

The FEC said in a statement that Kucinich contributions from the following states were verified for threshold purposes: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Mexico, New York, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, Washington and Wisconsin.

38. Regretably, I think the key phrase is 'up to' 18M
Since they're matching funds and don't match dollar for dollar, I don't think he'll come close to getting the full 18M. Maybe 6M.

Isn't it wonderful how the corporate media controls the money tap? They can create feast or famine, and nothing to do with the issues. Every time DK gets a serious mention, he gets money. When there's no mention, there's no money. Just imagine if he got major coverage for a month, reporters hanging on his every word, picture above the fold in the NYT...I bet he'd pull in 10M at least.

We should be ashamed to collude with what they're doing to us.
