movies that go in America's face this year. They all stood up to the false America that Karl Rove would have us believe exists. This is the kind of stuff we were hoping for 5 years ago ...alot of raw honesty. America, under the Bush regime, has shown its ugly side with racism, bigotry, homophobia, sexism, fundie extremism, greedism, judgementalism ...all given free reign. Hollywood showed us we still have a long way to go. And they are not controlled by Karl Rove.

4. i couldn't agree more.

To me the theme of oscars this year was tolerance. With it being a more general theme, rather than race, sexual orientation, etc, its harder to come up with an argument without sounding like a hate filled bigotted homophobe. This, hopefully, took the wind out of the sails of the pundits who wanted to talk about the Oscars rather than the Bush/GOP implosion. I guess Rush & Hannity are going to have to find a another teacher to attack this week.

6. I'll believe Hollywood has "guts" when it goes after the elites.

When Hollywood starts to produce movies about off-shoring of jobs, abject poverty in the face of massive tax cuts for the wealthy, and corporate power run amok, I'll believe they have guts.

As it is, Hollywood is making movies which are as likely to produce republican votes as effectuate real change in this country.

7. Guts?

I don't think releasing Brokeback Mountain into 2005-06 America really took guts. After all, this administration has beat the gay drum 24/7 since it sleazed into office. It doesn't strike me as odd that people would go see the movie considering the mass of garbage that's been floating around the last few years on this subject. The aspect that I think took guts is that it's not a morality play at all. That alone favorably disposed me to it before seeing it.

Good night and good luck? I know Coulter is out there cheering on Tailgunner Joe, but she's out there, even for wingnuts. Hell, even Horowitz called her out for her blatant revising of McCarthy's legacy. I'm not so sure it took guts to further demonize a demonized man.

Syriana? Ok, this one qualifies. The beauty of this movie is that it implicitly raised that nasty question that the current administration can't answer: What happens if the democracies we create have their own conception of their own interests? I hope asking that question leads to more honesty in evaluations of foreign policy. Sort of a two part test: 1) does this policy support our interests and, if so, 2) can we live with it?

But this is the industry that, in 2002-03 when it could have made a difference, was busy staring off into space while Chimpy was gearing up the American wehrmacht. In real time, the only notable comment I saw was a change in the movie poster for a forgettable bit of fluff called "What A Girl Wants." See if you can spot the "before" and "after" differences:
