N.C. celebrates confederate flag

North Carolina marks Confederate Flag Day with a salute to the flag and the heritage many defenders of the flag say it represents. Not everyone wants the heritage to be remembered as something to be proud of, though.

The Charlotte News & Observer reports hundreds crowded the state House chamber Saturday, sang "Dixie" and saluted the flag -- along with a Civil War-era state flag and the current U.S. flag. The event -- which the newspaper described as all-white -- was sponsored by the N.C. Division of the Sons of Confederate Veterans.

Many Americans, black and white, see a link between the confederate flag and a pro-slavery, Jim Crow, white supremacy attitude, the newspaper said, but the flag is still honored in the south.

University of South Carolina history professor Clyde Wilson said the response to the confederate flag is only a mask for a hatred for the South.

4. About a year ago a fellow DUer had a post...

...they were considering a career move that would take them to South Carolina and asked anyone in the know to enlighten them on living in South Carolina.

The one comment that made the greatest impact on me was "Remember, this is the DEEP South..." And the purpose of the statement was to let the person know that stepping into South Carolina, if you're not familiar with the South and have never lived there, is like stepping into another world.

Of course, that was just that one person's opinion, but my brother moved to North Carolina years ago from Massachusetts (he has since gone back home) and the stories he told me were absolutely as if they happened in another world.

I also remember Guy James (come back to the airwaves soon, Guy) telling a story about going to Crawford during Cindy Sheehan's time there. He went into a restaurant and ordered a chef's salad (big mistake...made him an immediate outcast). He said it was a big bowl of lettuce with a couple of things that might have been meat on top. The glare of the locals NEVER left him from the minute he picked up a fork. He left half the salad and got the hell out of there.

I live in a blue city-county University town in GA and I have lots of Democratic friends.

NC has many progressive cities.

SC is beautiful and the coast is wonderful esp. Beuafort and Charlesston.

9. The coast of SC are nice, but

the other 90% of SC is muggy, buggy and smells like a urinal. My aunt lives in SC (Columbia) and I stayed there for a two week stretch once and never plan on going back.

SC is a beautiful state populated by a number of wingnuts but not all are and there are many good people and wonderful places there.

in the 'holy' city of Charleston.

Charlestonians are a lot like the Chinese...they eat a lot of rice and worship their ancestors. And some of our state legislators are still trying to make it mandatory for artists coming here for Spoleto to submit a negative HIV test.

Our old state flag had a portion of the stars and bars on it. However, it was NOT the confederate battle flag. Are you sure that you did not see the state flag?

I live here and I have NEVER heard of the confederate flag being flown over any school in GA in modern times.

the name of the town, but it was about 30 miles due west of Atlanta waaay out in the boonies.
I remember the old state flag, of course, but this was the full blown deal being flown beneath the American flag - guess the parents thought the state flag wasn't a strong enough statement...
That's why I freaked out so bad - I simply could not believe my eyes! :wow:
