I'd like to see Hollywood and democrats quit promoting homosexuality. Then maybe the democrats could win back the White House.

I don't think you should judge DU based on this, but that's your decision to make of course. To be clear, "this" refers to the horse's ass attitudes expressed by several people in the last 24 hours (and by some a lot longer), in particular by a couple people who seem still to be in the midst of some sort of psychotic meltdown because another group of people had the gall to disagree with them. Offering opinions and trading information with people who agree with you on each and every issue doesn't do much either for you or others. Put another way, this kind of nonsense needs to be faced down and called out regularly and with volume else it will persist and eventually grow. People passionate about the issues involved are needed for that.

I suggest taking a break. For all its similarities at times, DU is not the real world, and it's far too easy to get caught up in it and have it affect our moods negatively. That's not a reflection on DU itself; the same is true of pretty much any online forum that is centered around issues that can be and often are controversial. A lot of children hang out in this place, and I don't mean that as a description of age, if you get my meaning. Don't let them dictate what you want to do.

If it means anything, I'll offer that one of the reasons I am responding in this thread is that I saw the names of a couple people in it (and others like it) with whom I have disagreed vehemently on various issues in the past, to the point we were nearly yelling at each other, and I wouldn't doubt some hard feelings or at least levels of distrust exist because of this. (Although, again to make this clear, I don't place these people in the same category as some of the shrill individuals who have been spewing forth prejudiced and ignorant drivel who have upset you.) To be perfectly frank about it, though, they're one of the big reasons I regularly come here. I want to encounter difficult challenges to my opinions. I don't expect to change their minds wholesale on various things, and I hope they don't expect to change mine, but I think in the end we incorporate our rhetorical battles into our mode of thinking about how to deal with issues important to us, and it makes us better at doing that. In short, you're going to run into people, even here, who make you want to throw large buildings, but a subset of those people still really do want the same things as you and are working toward the same goals, just in a different way. Again, this is not a description of the kind of people you're talking about in your original post. I'm just trying to point out that the gems among the rocks are a good reason to stay here, particularly when you do have the support of so many people who feel exactly as you do.

Anyway, I'll hush now. I understand your anger and find it a valid anger. I just hope you can find a way to turn it into positive energy.

For example: I loved Crash, and couldn't particularly identify personally with ANY of the characters and their situations. Doesn't mean a thing--the point of a great message film is that it speaks to people who may not understand the perspectives of those pictured in the story and gives them a window into other people's lives and experiences so that they may better understand the world around them and become more compassionate and tolerant.
