"Flag Protection Amendment" - email from Frist
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 07:58 PM by Greyskye
I just received the following spam from Bill Frist, in which he encourages comments on his blog. Here is the email:

Just a quick note to let you know that the Senate will debate the “Flag Protection Amendment” in the end of June. If it passes -- and I will do everything in my power to see that it does -- this constitutional amendment will give one of our Nation's proudest and most treasured symbols the protection it deserves.

Polls have shown that roughly 80% of the American people want to vote on the right to protect the flag. In addition, all 50 state legislatures have passed resolutions asking Congress to pass an amendment -- to be sent back to the states for debate and ratification.

Clearly, the American people have spoken. It’s time for the Senate to listen.

Battles have culminated in the raising of that flag. Countless U.S. soldiers have – using their last breaths – labored on the battlefield to hoist that flag. And desecrating it is an insult to their memory, and their sacrifice.

That flag represents all that we are -- all that we stand for. Freedom. Liberty. It represents so much to so many. And I believe we have a moral obligation to rise as a body and declare that it is wrong to burn the flag of the United States of America.

I'm not sure how I ended up on his spam list, as I have neither "subscribed online on our website, donated to VOLPAC, been a past supporter in a non-financial way or your contact information was gathered from Republican voter files."

There are a number of excellent posts at his blog deriding this waste of time and money, along with the typical freeper types who evidently feel that burning a flag is the equivalent of killing cats. Give 'em hell!

EDIT: I just found that they have a poll up on this issue as well:

Do you support a Constitutional amendment to protect the Flag?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Yes: 82%
No: 12%
Uncertain: 6%

17 total votes

The poll is here: http://www.volpac.org/

1. These are lies:
"Polls have shown that roughly 80% of the American people want to vote on the right to protect the flag. In addition, all 50 state legislatures have passed resolutions asking Congress to pass an amendment"

2. "That flag represents all that we are" - Speak for yourself
Edited on Tue Mar-07-06 07:39 PM by The_Casual_Observer
I think that "we" are a hell of a lot more than the sentiment wrapped up in a cheap chinese made polyester rag that isn't even fit to burn.

3. whenever they are desperate.
they drag out this old canard to change the subject. It's kind of like a "Have you stopped beating your wife" distraction. If you even acknowledge it, you are allowing them to frame the argument.

4. How do they square this with the Bible's command against graven images?
Some Christian groups refuse to worship the flag. Oh yes, the hypocrisy of false christians is only overshadowed by the blood on their hands from their wars and death squads.

6. I have never seen a flag burning in person.
I beleive I've seen it 4 or 5 times on TV in my entire life- and half of that footage was from overseas.

I'm not counting the Flag retirement ceremony I saw in Boy Scouts.

7. He should worry more about the Constitution than the flag.
What a fucking joke this "doctor" is.

8. If they are so concerned about the flag then I suggest that they
enforce all the rules of the flag. They can be found here: http://www.ushistory.org/betsy/flagetiq.html

I doubt that any of them know or follow all of these rules. If you check out the site you will even find a picture of Bush defacing a flag by writing on it.

10. The Boy Scouts at the local church burned 11 US flags last week
Edited on Wed Mar-08-06 12:04 AM by LastDemocratInSC
The local Boy Scouts cut them into strips and let each member drop a piece of a flag into a huge fire. I don't think that meets the guidelines that I call from my scouting days.

Is it just the thought that matters? One can burn a flag, or piece thereof, and be within the law so long as he isn't thinking seditious thoughts such as "I'm going to burn this stinking U.S. flag"?

What are we to think of a flag that is burned while the Boy Scout burner is thinking "Gosh, I wish I was squeezing Cindy's **** right now instead of burning this stinking U.S. flag"? Would that be a criminal offense?

Well, maybe that's not criminal but maybe this is ... "I'm glad to be burning this stinking U.S. flag right now instead of squeezing Cindy's ****".

See, we all should have paid attention to those sentence structure classes in 10th grade English. There are probably men in prison right now because they couldn't properly explain to the judge about things like this.

11. I made a suggestion
We'll see if it makes it to the comment site. I suggested that
flags be made out of fireproof material. That way, people would still be
able to exercise their first amendment rights, but would be frustrated by
not being able to set a flag ablaze.

12. My comment for his blog
What in the hell is this about? We have a war in Iraq that's out of control. We have spending that's out of control. We have lobbying scandals that threaten to take down many or our Congressmen and Senators. We have a plan in the works to turn over our ports to a country who not only is very forgiving of terrorists, but who's royal family actually visited Bin Laden in Afghanistan before 9/11. We have a President who is breaking the law with an illegal spying program that was instituted not, as he says, after Congress gave him approval to do so with the Iraq war resolution, but immediately after 9/11. Oh, and by the way, Congress is going to make it ok for him to break the law. I read it in the news today. Good job protecting the Constitution, Mr Frist.

I'm assuming you have no other pressing matters to deal with besides the flag...
