For those on the GLBTG side - Yes, it was the homophobes in the Academy who kept Brokeback Mountain from getting the Best Picture award. And remember that the screenplay added some elements that weren't in the original story.

For those favoring Crash - No, you're not homophobes and it did address some important issues.

I'm just upset that the Curse of the Were Rabbit didn't win best picture. I'm convinced it was those damn fromageophobes.

I'm not going to see Brokeback despite it's provenance as a short story in the New Yorker because it's really based on an old joke:

You know the one - Guy buys a ranch. After he's been there 3 months his neighbor shows up and invites him to a party. "There's gonna be some drinkin', you don't mind that right?' That is the equivalent of not voting in an election and then having the audacity to complain about the person who got elected, lamenting on how you were in favor of his or her opponent.

By the way, because you haven't seen it, you should probably refrain from saying that it is based on an old joke. If you had actually seen it, you'd realize there wasn't anything funny about the movie. You'd also realize that your comment has absolutely no basis in reality.

Perhaps, also, you don't understand the power entertainment has over people. By having more and more gay themed movies made that are sympathetic to LGBT people it not only increases our visibility, but increases awareness about our issues. Last time I checked there weren't people out there trying to criminalize the relationships of heterosexuals, nor people out there trying to ban heterosexual adoption, nor are there even people out there actively calling for the death penalty for heterosexuals. Maybe when that happens, you'll realize how important movies like Brokeback Mountain really are.

I'm listening to Stephanie Miller's show from yesterday talking about the Oscars and Chris and Jim were on the side of "Crash" and really liked the film and Chris said he liked "Crash" a lot better than BBM and he saw both of them and he predicted on Friday's show "Crash" would win.
