Kerry, Democrats Call on Frist to Keep Arctic Drilling out of Budget

Cantwell, Kerry, Democratic Coalition of Senators Call on Frist to Keep Arctic Drilling Out of Budget
March 9th, 2006 @ 2:45 pm

Senator Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Minority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV), Senate Energy and Natural Resources Committee Ranking Member Jeff Bingaman (D-NM), Senators Joe Lieberman (D-CT) and John Kerry (D-MA), and 14 other senators have made clear their deep opposition to any move to authorize drilling in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge through the latest budget process.

SNIP:

“Big oil’s Republican allies are once again trying to hijack the budget to drill in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge,” said Senator Kerry. “Just how many times will Democrats and many Republicans have to reject this bad idea before real energy security gets addressed in a serious way? ANWR has become the great white whale for some drill-at-all-costs ideologues who refuse to acknowledge we can’t drill our way to energy independence, we have to invent our way there. It’s time to stop wasting the American people’s time with this giveaway to big oil and put some real energy solutions on the table for consideration.”

1. So they snuck it into another bill? I thought they were putting a
stop to this crap, or is that wrapped up in the ethics bill everyone's dragging their feet on?

5. It won't stop until Alaska becomes a Democratic majority
once again. And with the oil assholes up here, along with the fundy assholes they brought with 'em, I don't foresee that happening anytime in the next few generations.

Of course, Uncle Ted IS 82...........

3. Wow. I'm surprised.
Don't get me wrong - I'm delighted this is happening.

But Lieberman?! Acting - gasp - like an actual Dem?!

Have ice cubes been found in Hell?

6. FYI, Lieberman has a great environmental record. He and Kerry
are two of the strongest when it comes to the environment, so he might be more of a Dem than you give him credit for.

8. Yep he does actually.
Got to give him credit he's alwasy fought against drilling in ANWR. I remember in December he said that was a primary goal when he first ran for Senate.

10. I have just realized they will continue to resubmit this bill until the
Democrats again hold a majority. Until then, they will keep it coming and we will (defeat it) again and again.

11. To be precise, they're not resubmitting the bill.
That's too straightforward and democratic.

Instead, they're yet again attaching the bill (like a leech) to another unrelated piece of legislation in the hopes that support for the main legislation will outweigh opposition to this stupid idea. I think there's a chapter on this tactic in Bill Frist's book "Political Cowardice 101".
