In a stunning moment, Dubai delivers a telegram; saves Bush's ***
Edited on Thu Mar-09-06 07:50 PM by ProSense
Dubai delivers a telegram to the Senate floor. Warner reads it.

In a stunning moment on the Senate floor, Senator Warner interrupted a speech by Senator Schumer to make a statement on behalf of H. Edward Bilkey, chief operating officer of DP World.

The Senate was headed to a vote that would have forced all Senators to document their position. The outcome would likely have forced Bush to live up to his threat to veto. (Edited to add: That would have been a disaster for the Republicans.)

In a stunning moment, Dubai bails out Dubya.

3. I found this really interesting
<The committee had voted 62-2 to approve an amendment to block the DPW deal and attach it to an emergency spending bill that funds the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and hurricane recovery on the US Gulf Coast.>

4. All This Doesn't Mean Shit
The truth is already out there before this little bullshit maneuver. They are dellusional to believe they are fooling people. Their death will be slow, because they chose so... enjoy the show.

7. Well the article does make a good point
It shows the comparisson with Miers and how they "made the problem go away" is by her withdrawing her name. Same thing with this deal. So now the talking heads will swoon over the republicans (damn the democrats obviously) and it'll be onto something else. *Sigh*

15. But with each screwup, they hurt themselves.
Each time, they add to the "incompetent" and "corrupt" labels that are starting to stick to them. Sometimes there's no going back, and I think that for many people, Bushco has jumped the shark, and they're just giving people more reason to blow them off.

That's what I'm hoping, anyway!

8. But it does mean something
It means Bush and the Republicans pushed the envelope in terms of arrogance and were forced to run for cover after the fallout. The Dubai telegram charade just shows how high the political stakes were. Most people know it was a show.

11. That's Kinda My Point
This is not a winner for the GOP, and I'm afraid some are making it sound like it is a good thing. It isn't, and it will back fire.

now.

Too bad it has cost us so much to get to this moment.

17. It Really is a Shame
I'll never forget what has happened to our country. The GOP should be afraid of pissing on my corn flakes, because I will do everything possible to make them pay for the damage they have done. I want accountability!

P&O Ports North America, Inc. <"Because of the strong relationship between the United Arab Emirates and the United States and to preserve this relationship, DP World has decided to transfer fully the US operations of P&O Ports North America, Inc. to a United States entity," the statement said.>

12. P&O is the U.K. company selling itself to Dubai Ports World.
They don't say who the new "buyer" will be.

6. Meh, Dubai respects American sentiment more than Bush
In the long run this just makes Bush and his ilk appear weaker.

18. DPW will still own 21 US Ports.
This is a smokescreen. They are not selling what they just bought for $6 billion, 700K.

right to operate the port.

24. How convenient. What deal was made behind closed doors?
The last thing they said is that they would fight, now they roll over and play dead, saving shrub's behind. That means only one thing, and that involves lots of money going to somebody.
