9. Could it be that she picks the right candidates...
and then the MSM and the DC leadership do their best to ensure no real change happens, and then most Dem voters just play follow the leader?

14. actually, I think most voters, and primary voters especially,
make pretty well informed choices on who they'll support - based on a combination of electibility and issues.

That Ivins has been consistently wrong on who she supports means she uses her heart more than her head - which isn't surprising, since she's written before that that IS her philosophy when voting in a primary... that's great, but it apparently isn't a philosophy shared by the majority of other voters.

And as such - using Ivins as a bellwether for the 2008 elections, I'll stand by my post...

15. Stand by it if you wish... voting on electability is idiotic.

18. why is voting on electability "idiotic"
isn't the point of a general election to win?

you can't just call something idiotic and walk away...

20. I thought we'd learned that already!
We need more than just a pretty face and whitebread background... we need someone who's going to stand up and speak out about their policy differences.

Perhaps just saying that it's idiotic wasn't enough... I mean it's idiotic to make that the primary criterion on which to make a selection.

21. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have both - Someone who speaks
for your heart and conscience and IS ALSO electable.

23. you can't always get what you want
especially in politics...

on the other hand, there have been candidates who fit that criteria, for me anyway.

and "electibility" is a pretty subjective thing, especially when you throw diebold into the mix.

10. And Molly can write like that while undergoing chemo...
I have read her since she was a cub on the Fort Wort Star-Telegram's staff.

She may hit some and miss some, but she is always swinging.

Edited on Fri Mar-10-06 03:13 PM by OldLeftieLawyer
after reading this particular column, I hit the local bookstore and bought every one of Molly's books off the shelf. Dropped them off at the local library on the way home.

It was the least I could do.

I hope she makes it. What's this? Her fourth go-round with cancer?

Shit.

Yet another misfire by the deity.

22. There is another option
Jonathan Tasini is running against HRC for the very reasons Molly points out here. The best way to take a stand on her centrist positions is to support a candidate who will stand up and take strong positions on key issues like the war and healthcare.

BTW- I can't imagine Molly saw this before she wrote the article, but I doubt it would endear her to Hillary any further.

24. why would Molly get upset over this?
"Bob Ortega, author of "In Sam We Trust," a history of Wal-Mart, said Clinton used her position to urge the company to improve its gender and racial diversity. Because of Clinton's prodding, Walton agreed to hire an outside firm to track the company's progress in hiring women and minorities, Ortega said.

"These were things the company was not addressing and wouldn't have, had she not pushed them to do so," Ortega said. "She's somebody who could definitely get things done."

In fact, Clinton proved to be such a thorn in Walton's side that at Wal-Mart's annual meeting in 1987, when shareholders challenged Walton on the company's lack of female managers, he assured them the record was improving "now that we have a strong willed young lady on the board."

Clinton was particularly vocal on environmental matters, pressing the company to boost its sale and use of recycled materials and other "green" products.

Garry Mauro, who served with Clinton on a Wal-Mart environmental advisory committee, pointed to many successes, such as persuading the company to establish recycling centers and sell products like recycled oil and long-life light bulbs.

"Hillary had real impact — when she had an idea, things got moving," he said. "When she resigned from the committee, it stopped having any innovative ideas and stopped being effective." "
