Alberto Gonzales on Claude Allen...
...in May 2003, when Allen was nominated by Bush to the federal appeals court.

In a statement issued last week, White House Counsel Alberto R. Gonzales said Allen "has led a distinguished legal career, serving in both the private and public sectors. He has a solid understanding of the law and has earned the respect and admiration of those who know him the best."

Wonder what happened to that SOLID UNDERSTANDING of the law.

1. Rule of thumb: Take anything Alberto says and turn it around 180
degrees, and viola, the truth.

Gonzalez' amazing assessment of Allen's respect and knowledge of the law, btw? Especially considering that it was known to the WH that there had been an 'incident' regarding Allen at Target since January? Looking forward to your take on Bush interpretion of legal matters in general!

Oh, and welcome to DU ~ :hi:

5. LOL …. here’s an ironic quote from Claude Allen’s confirmation hearing
Toward the end of Allen's hearing, Committee Chairman Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, asked him, "What would your grandfather say to you ?" Allen's grandfather was one of 25 children and the first in his family born out of slavery. A sharecropper, he raised 13 children and died at age 114.

Allen was visibly moved by the question and choked back tears. "My grandfather had a significant impact on my life," he said. "He would say, 'Continue serving our nation and giving back to those you have received from.'"

Allen was arrested for shoplifting then returning the stolen merchandise for the refund.

9. What makes someone with his background TURN on his own people and
others who are disenfranchised? Clarence Thomas is the same way.

How does this happen. I wonder if there are any psychological studies on people who turn their backs on their backgrounds? Or, are there just people who are evil and will pop up in any family. Maybe not evil but psychologically impaired in some way.

Bush has so many people in his administration who came from backgrounds so different from his own privileged one...and yet they somehow suck up to him and the Repugs adopting their privileged views without a care in the world.

And, that's how Bush gets them passed through Congress. No one could turn down the Grandson of a Sharecropper the first born out of slavery who raised 13 children. No one could deny "Little Star" Condi the job as Secretary of State...No one could deny Clarence Thomas, son of another sharecropper a Supreme Court nomination...and it's not just African Americans it's people like Gonzales who has a heartwarming story of being the first Hispanic to serve as Attorney Genera. Yet there are so many in his administration who ARE privileged. One wonders how they all co-exist.
