Internet blows CIA cover

WASHINGTON -- She is 52 years old, married, grew up in the Kansas City suburbs and now lives in Virginia, in a new three-bedroom house.

When the Tribune searched a commercial online data service, the result was a virtual directory of more than 2,600 CIA employees, 50 internal agency telephone numbers and the locations of some two dozen secret CIA facilities around the United States.

Only recently has the CIA recognized that in the Internet age its traditional system of providing cover for clandestine employees working overseas is fraught with holes, a discovery that is said to have "horrified" CIA Director Porter Goss.

"Cover is a complex issue that is more complex in the Internet age," said the CIA's chief spokeswoman, Jennifer Dyck. "There are things that worked previously that no longer work. Director Goss is committed to modernizing the way the agency does cover in order to protect our officers who are doing dangerous work." Dyck declined to detail the remedies "since we don't want the bad guys to know what we're fixing."

Can't you tell a contrived story when you read it?

This is the administration providing cover for their dear Libby & Cheney.

What will be interesting is how they will prove it. I can say this information existed on the internet at the time of the "outing" but proving that it did is entirely different.

but still it's pretty funny that the CIA would claim a weakness like this and not a single head rolls.

Things that make you go hmmmmmm.

It doesn't really matter - they're only contriving stories like this for their base, not for us, to prepare them for accepting how leaks get their start in life. Evil liberal bloggers, of course. The commercial online data service they're supposed to have searched is Lexis-Nexis, and "not releasing her name" is the equivalent of rumor, which they are good at crafting and spreading.

What an enterprising person with access at a credit agency CAN do is search millions of EINs nationwide and run those up against a list of known front company and government EIN's to find out who is working or has worked for what agency, but not necessarily in what capacity. An enterprising unscrupulous person who did that would also trigger all kinds of alarms by doing that.

I don't believe very much of this story is true in any meaningful way.

8. I saw this on the front cover of the Tribune yesterday

(the Sunday edition of the Tribune gets distributed on Saturday to retail outlets).

the FIRST thought that came to my mind was "hmpf, this is some kind of planted story". For what reason, I didn't bother to think about, but I knew there was one. The 'why' you are all saying here makes sense.

I never realized until now how much I truly consider the MSM as nothing more than "American Pravda".

10. Yeah, it's definitely a game of "dad's pitch" for Goss and Cheney

Watch for the media tie in by some RNC types, then the talking heads will start to parrot.

Which isn't to say it's not an entirely true story. But we must ask ourselves "why would Porter Goss be promoting this story instead of keeping out of print, if possible?"
