From my perspective, I see a Republican Party in disarray but desperately trying to get their message back on course. They haven't yet recovered from the Dubai ports sale debacle - and listening to a Bill Frist this morning, we might question whether there are still plans behind the scenes to push it through. They may not be ready to give up on this "deal". The Republicans are very careful not to stray too far from their support of their Chimpster president.
Also, we see abortion as the issue that is simmering on the back burner. They haven't decided yet that this will be the winning issue for them that it has been in the past. George Will on ABC's This Morning said that up to this point, many people had seen Democrats as too radical with their suppport of "partial-birth abortion", etc, but that they may now see the Republicans as going too far and that it may backfire on the Repubs, paraphrasing.
And the Iraq War is the issue that will not go away. The Republicans want to withdraw a good number of troops from Iraq before November so they will look better for the election. However, with the "sectarian" civil war growing each day, it may get more and more difficult to withdraw the troops for the benefit of the politicians.
And we have Russ Feingold's announcement this morning. He will propose the "censure" of the president for his admitted breaking of the law. Since the Republicans control the House and Senate, it is doubtful that this will come to fruition but it will keep the attention on the spying and the criminal acts of this White House.
