"Stupid People are Conservative
From 1894, Charles Grant Allen, in the Westminster Gazette:

"Stupid people can only see their own side to a question: they cannot even imagine any other side possible. So, as a rule, stupid people are Conservative."

1. John Stuart Mill
"Conservatives are not necessarily stupid, but most stupid people are conservatives."

2. Makes sense to me.
Most conservatives don't seem to be able to grasp the big picture. They want everything black and white to keep their lives simpler. They fear change because they don't understand that it is a normal part of life.

4. Well, I have to disagree with you.

Many are just old fashioned conservatives who believe in less government, work hard to be successful-pull yourself up by the boots straps and etc.

My family- all MIT, Harvard, Penn grads, who are very hard working would not take a hand out even if faced with chapter 11- And, this has actually happened.

They are old fashioned conservatives.

Nothing this repug administration does represents them.

6. This is not "Conservatives are stupid people" . . .
The gist of the quote is that stupid people tend to be more conservative, not "conservative people tend to be stupid".

Seems more likely that the conservatives cultivate stupidity. You are more able to convince someone of something the less they tend to think, or the less that they tend to be informed.

My brother is not stupid, is a RWer (not sure how badly, but he didn't miss a chance to send BS about Kerry in 2004), and is "pro-life" (anti-choice).

And yet, he has had (on more than one occasion) to borrow money from his "leftie" brother . . . me.

7. You've made a logical mistake
"Stupid people are conservative" doesn't mean "Conservative people are stupid". If p implies q, then the only logical conclusion from that is that not-q implies not-p.

8. i know very few, if any, people who aren't hard working.
who don't try to do the right thing their whole life long.

i have no idea what being hard working and conservative have to do with each other.

5. "Conservative" politicians use that to their advantage
Telling the hand picked masses that they are just as stupid and as religiously insane as they are. They make fun of people with higher education, pointy headed liberal elitists who are smart, how terrible. They scoff at the notion that education is a key to success and wisdom. bush is charming and folksy and can't talk gooder; so he's got to be a wonderful merkun. Don't need no stupid education, just a map to the polling place.

9. NO and YES
Conservatives say NO.

Liberals say YES !!!!

Conservatives want to tell others what they can't do.

Liberals want to give everyone equal freedom and liberty to persue their dreams !!!

Conservatives want to change people to be more like them.

Liberals want to enable people to be what they aspire to be !!!

Conservatives want to change society to how it once was.

LIberals want to create a better future !!!

I'm proud to be a liberal !!!!

10. Many, who are not stupid, are ignorant.
Edited on Tue Mar-14-06 09:08 AM by dogman
Stupidity implies a lack of knowledge. Ignorance is ignoring knowledge. There are quite a few well educated conservatives who prefer to ignore the facts to justify their prejudices.
