Washington and Lee students pick Kerry for Democratic nomination
By the Associated Press

Published January 31, 2004

LEXINGTON, Va. -- Students at Washington and Lee University chose John Kerry to win the Democratic presidential nomination Saturday during a mock convention that has picked the correct opposition party nominee 17 of 22 times since 1908.

"We thought it might come down to the last state's votes, but Kerry's momentum put him over the top with a mere five states to go," said Michael Denbow, political chairman of the convention's executive committee.

Kerry won the nomination with 2,430 delegates, roughly 56 percent. Howard Dean was second with 943 delegates and about 22 percent, and John Edwards received 719 votes, almost 17 percent, Denbow said.

A candidate needs 2,162 delegates to win the nomination.
