Catholic church messing with House Dems

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/03/10/AR2006031001845.html

Catholic Democrats Scolded on Abortion

Top U.S. Roman Catholic leaders told Democratic lawmakers yesterday that there is no wiggle room in church teaching on abortion and that they are duty-bound to work against "the destruction of unborn human life." The statement by three top leaders of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops is a response to 55 Catholic Democrats in the House who issued a public statement Feb. 28 asking for room to disagree on abortion.

The bishops, in turn, said they were willing to work together on issues affecting the "poor and vulnerable" but would not budge on church teaching that says abortion is gravely immoral.

The three bishops who signed the statement were Cardinal William Keeler of Baltimore, head of the bishops' Pro-Life Activities Committee; Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick of Washington, who heads a task force on Catholic politicians; and Bishop Nicholas DiMarzio of Brooklyn, chairman of the bishops' Domestic Policy Committee.

1. I betcha...
...they didn't scold any Republicans on their stance on the death penalty?

The Catholic Church, in America anyway, is ridiculously hypocritical on their supposed "Pro Life" position. They're becoming more of a "Pro-Republican" position.

8. I bet that you're right.
The church is playing partisan politics. So when exactly will they lose their tax exempt status?

3. And people wonder why the Catholic church . . .
Is dying in America (and Europe, for that matter). Arrogance, irrelevance, and corruption. A nasty combo.

5. Clean your own goddam house first...
and then we'll talk.

But, in the meantime, you need to stop supporting poverty-producing programs like preaching against birth control in Africa and S. America.

Then we'll talk.

You need to stop trying to hide vile criminal acts on the part of your Priesthood.

Then we'll talk.

Until then, shut the hell up.

6. Any church which claims to support the teachings of Jesus the
Christ but then substitutes their own notions, instead, deserves nothing but derision. Although their history is long, their spotty record, nay, criminal record, puts them way beyond any serious consideration as a voice to be honored or followed. I am rarely angry with any religious organization, but this time I am. They should tend to their own knitting and concentrate on the business they purport to have been created for.
The have no horse in this race! Go away!

7. Why is it you only hear of the Catholic Church
leaning on politicians to support their position on abortion? Have they also leaned on politicians to support their position on the Iraq War, which, I believe, they are against? Have I missed something?

9. My 83-year-old lifelong Catholic dad went on
a tirade the other day against the Church butting into politics. He said if the Catholic church hierarchy wants to take a stand on issues of importance it shoud start with supporting a living wage, universal healthcare, strengthening programs that benefit people like Social Security and Medicare, strongly opposing war, etc. He continued that abortion is a personal matter and none of anybody's business.

If a guy like my dad is fed up, the institutional church is in big trouble.

10. I'm old enough to remember when ...
Edited on Wed Mar-15-06 02:24 PM by NanceGreggs
... no one thought JFK could be elected president, due to the fear that the US government would be under the control of the Catholic Church.

The Vatican should be reminded that US officials are elected to represent the views of their constituents, and not the views of their religious leaders, nor their personal beliefs.

One can only wonder why the Church feels a moral duty to 'scold' US lawmakers re their position on reproductive rights, while they stand virtually silent on the issue of the torture of our fellow human beings under the auspices of our government.

And finally, in view of the fact (not conjecture or innuendo, but FACT) that for decades the Church has persisted in ignoring the sexual abuse of children by their own priests, shielding those they know to be guilty of same, and placing the abusers in positions where they will have access to even MORE children to molest, it is downright laughable for them to take the high road on ANY issue whatsoever.

The teachings of Jesus Christ are a beautiful guideline to how one lives one's life, and I applaud Catholics who adhere to them. But the Catholic Church, as an organization, is an abomination before God.
